Wouldn't the rest of the gear, ultimately, be grounded via the outlet as well? Does running the ground through the same device receiving the signal offer an advantage over straight grounding to the outlet?

When I had an outboard phono preamp, I'd just use a screw on the chassis of the amp it was plugged into to ground the turntable.

Some decks of this vintage grounded via one of the signal grounds on the RCA plugs. Do you have a multimeter ? if so you can test the resistance or continuity from the metal top of the deck to either RCA shield - the outer metal ring, not the inner pin.

You may want to go to a "big box" hardware store and get about 5 feet (1.5 meters) of fine insulated 18 or 20 gauge stranded wire. Strip about 6 or 8 mm of insulation off each end with a knife. Then attach one end of the wire to the chassis of the amplifier, NOT to a speaker terminal, but rather to a shiny screw in the bottom of amp.
