What broken bone in the leg can stunt its growth?
Only if the epiphyseal plate (the primary growth site for bone length) hasn’t closed and a severe injury occurs. If a severe growth plate fracture occurs - such as a crush injury - it can’t stop growth at the site. Most bone growth sites close during our teenage years. Some last until early or mid twenties.
What leg bone is not a weight bearing bone?
There are five different weight-bearing grades (2): Non-weight bearing: the affected leg, ankle, or foot cannot withstand any weight whatsoever and attempting to do so would cause further harm or prolong your recovery. Partial weight-bearing: the injury can tolerate a small amount of weight. This can be a transitional period from non-weight-bearing to full weight-bearing.
What is the largest bone in your leg?
the largest bone in the *leg* is the tibia. As before, this articulates with the femur to form the knee joint. While the patella connects to the tibia, it does not articulate with the tibia. The tibia also articulates with with the talus to form the...
What is the biggest bone in lower leg?
The lower leg is made up of two very strong, long bone—the tibia and the fibula. The tibia, also known as the shin bone, is the stronger and larger of the two. It is located toward the middle of the lower leg. The fibula, or calf bone, is smaller and is located on the outside of the lower leg. The lower leg is also home to nerve fibers ...

What is the outside of the leg called?
The lateral compartment is along the outside of the lower leg. It contains the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles. These muscles pull the toes and feet outward.
What bone is on the side of your thigh?
The only bone in the thigh is the femur, which extends from the hip to the knee.
What lower leg bone is on the lateral side?
fibulaThe fibula, also called the calf bone, is significantly smaller and is situated on the lateral (farther from the midline) side of the tibia. The main muscle in this area of the leg is the gastrocnemius, which gives the calf a bulging muscular appearance.
What is the outside of the upper leg called?
Quadriceps include four large muscles located in the front of the thigh: vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, and rectus femoris. They start at the pelvis (hip bone) and femur (thigh bone) and extend down to the patella (kneecap) and tibia (shin bone).
What causes pain on outside of lower leg?
Peroneal tendonitis is a condition that causes pain on the outside of the foot and up the outside of your lower leg when walking or running. Peroneal tendonitis is rare and caused by overuse that impacts athletes such as runners and longer distance walkers.
Why does my femur bone hurt?
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is a condition that causes pain over the outside of your upper thigh (or both thighs). The cause is usually due to inflammation or injury to some of the tissues that lie over the bony prominence (the greater trochanter) at the top of the thigh bone (femur).
Can you walk with a broken fibula?
Because the fibula is not a weight-bearing bone, your doctor might allow you walk as the injury recovers. You also might be advised to use crutches, avoiding weight on the leg, until the bone heals because of the fibula's role in ankle stability.
What happens when you break your fibula?
Tenderness, swelling, or bruising. Visible signs of deformity. Inability to bear weight or take any form of pressure on the injured leg. Sensations of coldness or numbness in the foot.
Is the fibula on the inside or outside?
Tibia and fibula are the two long bones located in the lower leg. The tibia is a larger bone on the inside, and the fibula is a smaller bone on the outside. The tibia is much thicker than the fibula.
Why does my upper leg joint hurt?
Sitting for long periods can put pressure on the joints and muscles, particularly of the hips and legs. Lack of activity may also cause the muscles to weaken, triggering widespread muscle pain. People who have upper thigh pain due to a sedentary lifestyle may also feel pain throughout their body.
What muscle runs down the outside of your thigh?
Vastus lateralis. The largest of the quadriceps muscles, it's located on the outside of the thigh and runs from the top of your femur (thighbone) down to your kneecap (patella).
Why does my rectus femoris hurt?
Excessive passive stretching or activation of a maximally stretched muscle can also cause strains. Of the quadriceps muscles, the rectus femoris is most frequently strained. Several factors predispose this muscle and others to more frequent strain injury.
Anterior Compartment
The anterior compartment, in the front of the shin, holds the tibialis anterior, the extensor digitorum longus, the extensor hallucis longus, and the peroneus tertius muscles. These muscles pull the toes and feet upward, a process known as dorsiflexion .
Lateral Compartment
The lateral compartment is along the outside of the lower leg. It contains the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles. These muscles pull the toes and feet outward. They also help with pointing the foot, or plantarflexion. To feel these muscles contract, place your hand on the outside of your shin and turn your foot out.
Posterior Compartment
The posterior compartment holds the large muscles that we know as the calf muscles—the gastrocnemius and soleus. This compartment also contains plantaris muscle.
Deep Posterior Compartment
The deep posterior compartment lies deep within the back of the lower leg. It includes the tibialis posterior, the flexor digitorum longus and the flexor hallucus longus.
The Knee Bones
Here we will look at each the different knee bones and their associated structures and how they work. We will also go on to look at what can go wrong with them and how to treat any problems that may arise.
Structures Around the Knee Bones
Located around the knee bones are a number of different structures that stabilise and control the joint and allow it to move.
What Next?
If you have enjoyed learning about the knee bones and would like to know more about the other structures that make up the knee, visit the knee anatomy guide or choose from the following:
The Hindfoot
The hind foot is the area at the back of the foot, comprising of the two shin bones and two tarsal bones.
The Midfoot
The midfoot is made up of five further tarsal bones. These foot bones sit together to form the main shape of the foot, the foot arches. The bones in the midfoot are the:
The Forefoot
The forefoot is made up of the five long metatarsal bones and the fourteen small toe bones known as the phalanges.
Common Problems in the Foot Bones
The most common problems affecting the foot bones are injury and stiffness which can changes the position of the joints:
