Top 5 Reasons Pros Choose Rockwool over Fiberglass
- 1) It’s Fire Resistant Made from stone, ROCKWOOL can withstand temperatures up to 2150° F. ...
- 2) It’s Water Repellent. ROCKWOOL insulation repels water, so R-value is not affected. ...
- 3) It’s Made from Stone. ROCKWOOL insulation is made from natural stone and recycled material. ...
- 4) It Maximizes the Comfort. ...
- 5) It Maximizes the Peace and Quiet.
Which is better, batts or rock wool?
If batts it must be, rock wool is the better choice for it's density, air retardency, and fireproof factors. But it's still a step down from blown/sprayed goods for total air tightness & air-retardency.
Is it safe to insulate a wall?
If you insulate the wall cavities the sheathing will run a lot colder, and soak up scads of water by the time you're able to get the gypsum up and air seal it. It's definitely safer to wait until warmer weather.
Is Roxul as irritating as fiberglass?
In terms of irritation, I think the Roxul is pretty aggravating, but not as much as fiberglass.
Can you tack a Roxul cutting knife?
One more 'pro-tip': you can tack the special roxul cutting knife on to that order from the pro deck at the big orange for pretty cheap. You might consider that as alternative to a bread knife, though the bread knife works too. My bread knife is starting to get dull.
Is cellulose hygroscopic?
Cellulose is hygroscopic, and will safely store a large fraction of the wintertime moisture burden, sharing that load with the structural wood, offering significant moisture protection.
Is dense packed fiberglass more air retardant than rock wool?
Dense packed blown goods are more air retardent than rock wool or high density fiberglass batts, and during installation the blown fiber follows all air leakage paths and plugs them. (Not perfectly, but I'll accept 95%, eh?)
Is damp sprayed cellulose better than dense pack?
But even low-density damp-sprayed cellulose will beat both on real-world thermal performance, since it eliminates the inevitable thermal-bypass channels of compressions and gaps that occur in even the most meticulous batt installation. Dense-packing is more expensive, but may not be "worth it" if you' re adding 4" of foam the exterior, since the foam layer would keep the cellulose at a much more stable temperature & humidity, dramatically reducing the density required to keep it from settling with age. Dense-pack can sometimes be quite expensive, but damp-sprayed should be in the same ball park as HD batts, maybe less.
My first project as a homeowner - rowhome kitchen deck facelift
Obviously a relatively simple project, but wanted to share because of how well I think it turned out. Despite the project's simplicity it was pretty labor and time intensive given the lattice work on my vertical rails.
Finally completed floor to ceiling floating shelves
Finally completed floating shelves for my wife. We have been looking for some way to divide the living room and dining area.
Basic tub shower replacement
I've been renovating my 1200 square foot 1930 house in Missouri for the past couple of years. We decided to replace the tub yesterday. My experience with projects in this house have led me to expect them to be more involved than anticipated. So I assumed when we pulled out the old tub, at the very least, the subfloor would be rotten.
Overview of Mineral Wool Insulation
Rockwool is made from a mixture of basalt (a type of volcanic rock) and steel slag (a byproduct of the steel manufacturing industry).
Manufacturing Process of Rockwool
Rockwool is manufactured through a complex and unique process. This manufacturing process gives the material many of its insulating and heat-resistant properties.
Characteristics of Mineral Wool Insulation
Due to its unique manufacturing process and the raw materials used, Rockwool insulation has distinctive characteristics and features.
Fiberglass Insulation – Manufacturing Process
The raw materials used to manufacture fiberglass include silica sand, soda ash, limestone, borax, feldspar, and magnesite. Recycled glass is also frequently used.
Important Features of Fiberglass
Like all insulation materials, fiberglass insulation comes with a handful of features and characteristics that are unique to it.
Mineral Wool vs. Fiberglass – Which One Should You Choose?
Let’s dive in and see how fiberglass and mineral wool’s features compare with one another.
Wrapping Up
As you can see, both Rockwool and fiberglass insulation have their advantages and drawbacks. The good thing is that you can take advantage of both types (while avoiding their pitfalls) by installing them in the respective areas for which they are best suited.
