The reason Elie initially lied to Stein about the fate of his family was to give him hope and a reason to survive. Elie understands that without hope and something to live for, one can easily give up and die in the horrific environment. In my opinion, one cannot blame Elie for lying to his relative, because he did so out of love and concern for Stein's well-being. Elie knew that if he were to tell the tragic truth to Stein, his relative would give up on life and surely die in the concentration camp. Since Elie lied to Stein in order to ease his relative's mind and give him hope, I would say that Elie made the morally right decision.
