Implicit in my argument is the question of whether analysis, as defined by Baer et al. (1968; Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1987 ), is possible in the practice of ABA and, if so, how it can be carried out while maintaining both treatment integrity and social validity.

A second way that basic and applied behavior analytic research and the practice of ABA could be related is that basic researchers might look to practitioners for problems to solve experimentally. Alternatively, practitioners themselves can carry out experimental analysis to discover not only the controlling variables of the behaviors they encounter, or whether the solutions to problems they come up with are, in fact, working, but, perhaps more important, why. Of course, the extent to which either of these occurs is unknown, but it is probably safe to say that some practitioners probably do look to the experimental literature for help in solving behavioral problems they encounter. Based on my own discussions with practitioners, however, it seems as if they rarely carry out analysis.
