Why are my radiators getting hot when hot water is on?

The most likely reasons for your radiators heating up when you turn on the hot water taps would be a fault in the check valve in older boilers, or the diverter valve in newer ones. Both control the flow of heat and hot water to the different parts of your heating system.

How do you know if your radiators need bleeding?

A good way to check if your heating system needs bleeding is to see if your radiators have cold patches at the top but are warm at the bottom. If so, you need to bleed them to let the trapped air escape and the hot water to circulate freely once again.

When a diverter fails or gets blocked with debris, hot water intended for the hot water circuit can get into the radiator circuit. Then the radiators will be hot even though the heat is turned off.

Can you have hot water and heating on at same time?

Combi boilers work by signalling a sensor once you've requested hot water which tells the boiler to burn fuel (whether gas, electric or oil).
