As a general rule, a bathroom fan is not required by code, if there is an openable window in the bathroom. Thanks Allison! Great post Thanks Allison! Great post with insight into something that I have often pondered when in hotel rooms. Why do I need a bath fan?

The primary purpose of a bath fan is to remove moisture from your home. High moisture levels over time will cause mold and can get high enough to ruin drywall. Your bath fan should be run any time you are running hot water. Sink, shower or tub. If your fan is too noisy you can buy a quiet replacement. Fans are rated by the HVI on the campus of Texas A&M. Sound is measured in Sones. The Sone scale is linear compared to the decibel scale which is exponential. Typical bath fans are rated at 4 sones or higher. You can buy a 80CFM bath fan that rates at less than 1/3 sone. I have had the fan hold up a square of TP, and ask someone to turn on the fan. They turn it off and the TP floats down. Good Visual effect.

How long is a hotel restroom duct?

1. Most manufacturers list a maximum duct length of 15-20 ft. with each 90 degree bend being calculated at 5'. For economy's sake most hotel restrooms are located nearest the hallway so all plumbing can run in a central corridor. The numbers in most cases won't add up to a properly ducted exhaust and moisture considerstions within walls are not insignificant.

Does smoke linger in a vent?

The smoke and residual odors, will saturate the ducting and insulation and the odors will linger and travel from one unit to another. Since most vents will accumulate lint and dust, that dust and lint will also absorb cigarette odors, and distribute them throughout the ventilation system, especially when one unit uses their fan, and others don’t. This forces the residual odors, to vent in the direction of least restriction, or obstruction; but can still go into units that often use their fans as well.

Taking the grille off exposes the inside of the bathroom ventilation pathway, or at least part of it. It’s difficult to tell here exactly what they’ve done, but my guess is that the air going into this vent heads for a wall cavity that’s used as a duct. I also suspect that cavity isn’t air sealed.

Can a bathroom vent be a problem?

Even in warm weather, this type of bathroom ventilation can be a problem. In humid climates, hotels in humid places, especially along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, used to have a lot of problem with musty smelling rooms.
