Knock Out roses are considered to be hardy through U.S. Department of Agriculture Zone 5, but if you live in an area close to the dividing line between two zones, your roses may not tolerate harsher weather. Consider replacing your Knock Out with a rose more suited for your location.
Why do my knockout roses keep dying?
I have had some trouble and am hoping for some help/advice. Several years ago we had landscaping installed that included a dozen pink flower carpet roses. Over the course of a few years, though I watered, fertilized, and cut back for winter, many of them died. So I took them out and planted knock outs in the fall.

Some suggestions for zone 5: Don't cut roses back in the Fall; cut them back to perfectly healthy wood (white centers on the cut surface of the cane) just before growth begins in the spring. Not doing this is one major cause of failure with roses in cold climates.
