Re: TXV icing up
As the moisture passes thru the TXV it begins to freeze and cause a blockage. This restriction then lowers the outlet temperature of the valve and causes excessive ice to build up.

Why does TXV freeze up?

The TXV is the Thermal Expansion Valve and it controls the flow of refrigerant. Improper flow of refrigerant can cause a frozen coil.

How do you fix a stuck TXV?

In some instances where the TXV is stuck, a lubricant additive like A/C ReNew may be added to the refrigerant system to help free the valve. Once the additive is added, it is still necessary to exercise the TXV by placing the bulb into hot and cold water several times.

How do you know when a TXV valve is bad?

A TXV valve can fail if it's too open and overfeeding or too closed (underfeeding)....However, some of the most common (and easiest to identify) bad TXV valve symptoms are:There is frost on the evaporator.Your unit is blowing warm air.The AC compressor is running constantly.

Can a TXV freeze?

If you're experiencing problems with your AC unit, a faulty TXV valve could be the cause of it. It can become unresponsive to the signal and allow refrigerant into the evaporator coil, which causes it to freeze.

Can you manually open a TXV?

The TXV cannot be adjusted open or closed, it is a modulating valve. Turning the adjustment stem clockwise will only increase spring pressure causing a higher superheat. Turning the adjustment stem counterclockwise will decrease spring pressure reducing superheat.

How much should a TXV replacement cost?

A TXV expansion valve manages the amount of liquid refrigerant flowing through the air conditioning system, so if it goes bad, you'll need to replace it to keep your AC functioning properly. Expect to pay an average of $400 to get the job done, but it may cost as little as $200 or as much as $700.

What are the symptoms of a expansion valve stuck open?

If the expansion valve is stuck open or clogged, the AC system will not cool properly. A clogged valve will lead to too little refrigerant, increasing the pressure in the system and causing the AC compressor to overheat.

Can you overcharge a TXV?

When a unit is slightly overcharged with a TXV metering device, both suction and superheat may appear normal but the performance and efficiency are diminished. These conditions are caused by the TXV as it meters refrigerant flow into the evaporator and excess charge is stored in the condenser.

What happens if TXV valve is stuck closed?

If the TXV fails closed it can be said to be “underfeeding,” which means not enough boiling refrigerant is fed through the evaporator coil and superheat will be too high at the evaporator outlet.

What happens if an expansion valve gets stuck?

If the expansion valve is stuck open or clogged, the AC system will not cool properly. A clogged valve will lead to too little refrigerant, increasing the pressure in the system and causing the AC compressor to overheat.

What happens if AC expansion valve is stuck open?

If the expansion valve is stuck open or clogged, the A/C system will not cool properly. A clogged valve will increase the pressure in the system and cause the A/C compressor to overheat. If the valve is stuck open, too much refrigerant is allowed to pass through the system and into the compressor.

What is the most common cause of TXV hunting?

Common reasons for TEV hunting Undercharged system – Intermittent loss of subcooling is causing loss of expansion valve capacity and resulting intermittent high superheat. Poor bulb contact – Loss or delay of temperature signal to bulb causes erratic and unpredictable operation.
