check engine light on when really cold outside
never add ATF to a VP injected fuel system. add 2 stroke oil to fuel or run bio. (not sure about the HOWES stuff) VP injection pumps are not repairable (I highly doubt you will find someone who can actually repair it, and even so the parts will prolly cost as much as replacing the whole unit). check out some of the sponsors for a new VP.

Can evap detect smoke leaks?
I have seen evap small leak codes that several garages can not find even with a smoke machine. The only thing you could do is try a gas cap and take to a shop that is ase certified and have smoke tested.......your looking for a needle in a haystack.there is a new device that when the smoke is introduced with c02 you take a c02 detector and run along lines and components and when sounds you spray a foam that changes color.most of the time a smoke machine with the uv dye will show a leak but there are those that need the new technology to find them.I wish I could be more help.
Why does my engine light glow?
That’s because the light indicates that one part or system in your vehicle is not functioning correctly.
Why does my car light up when I put the gas cap on?
OBD-II readers and services like AutoZone’s Fix Finder are pretty useful for diagnosing the cause of a glowing CEL. That’s because there are many potential causes that vary in severity. Most cars will illuminate the light if the gas cap is loose, but they will use the same light to indicate an engine that is misfiring. A loose gas cap is not that big of a deal: the best case scenario sees you tightening the cap, while the worst case is you need to replace it. Engine misfiring, on the other hand, can cause seriously damage your engine over time.
Can I Check My Own Light?
You can. All that you need to check your own light is an OBD-II reader, which can pull codes that help you find out what’s wrong with your car. If you don’t have a code reader, keep reading to learn the most common causes, and then bring your car to your local AutoZone to find out why your Check Engine Light is on.
How to tell if coil is bad?
A quick trick to determine if a coil is causing a misfire is to simply move the coil and swap with another on the engine. If you have a #2 misfire and move the #2 coil to #4, for example, then the misfire moves to #4, you know the coil is suspect.
How does a mass airflow sensor work?
Your mass airflow sensor (MAF) measures the amount of air entering the engine to determine how much fuel is needed to run your engine properly. If there are any leaks before or after the mass airflow sensor in the intake tract, a light can trigger. Mass airflow sensors are sensitive to oil, dirt, and water vapor, and any contamination on them can trigger a light. Sometimes, cleaning the sensor with intake / mass airflow sensor cleaner can fix the issue. Other times, the sensor needs to simply be replaced. Be sure to check the intake ducting carefully for leaks, rips or tears/damage.
Can Autozone read engine codes?
While yes, both yourself and AutoZone can read the engine computer’s stored codes, and through Fix Finder, determine likely causes based on thousands of mechanics intel, none of these can pinpoint with 100% accuracy exactly why the CEL came on. Many times, multiple sensors are telling us something, but not telling us why, ...

My ford windstar 2003 hesitates during cold weather or wet conditions. But good during idle. Some time shows blinking engine light
The flashing and rough running is to to a misfire or misfires cause by arcing due to moisture on ignition components. Eventually these misfires can lead to other problems such as damage catalytic converter. Start by identifying which cylinder (s) is/are misfiring. The arching can be reproduced with a spray bottle filled with soapy water.
Engine light not showing in cold weather
It could be the ecu, but before you purchase a new one, have a shop check the power feeds and grounds for the ecu. Sounds like it could be an electrical connection that only has good contact when it's warm.

I started it on a cold day and it was running rough with the engine light flashing, Now it is running fine with engine light on
IF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLASHING, THAT MEANS YOU HAD A MISFIRE. CHECKING CODES CAN SOMETIMES HELP TO ISOLATE WHICH CYLINDER. NOT KNOWING THE MODEL OR ENGINE YOUR DEALING WITH, SOME THINGS TO CHECK ARE, SPARK PLUGS, DIST CAP AND PLUG WIRES (IF SO EQUIPPED). I WOULD SUSPECT A IGNITION PROBLEM AS THE COLD SEEMED TO BRING IT ON.
I have 2002 chevy avalanche, check engine light comes on only when its cold & runs rough at idle. When warmer weather light goes off & runs fine. Have replaced mass air flow sensor
Mine did the same thing...at 42F degrees, run bad. After it warm up, it would be fine. This would only happen in the winter. It would throw a code saying it was lean in Bank 1 or 2. The issue is a contraction of the intake gasket due to the cold weather, when it contracts, it leaks air.
