Start of the 'Quasi-War'
After some members of Congress asked to see the diplomats' reports regarding what had transpired in France, Adams handed them over with the names of the French agents replaced with the letters X, Y and Z; thus the name XYZ Affair.Nov 1, 2021
What does XYZ Affair stand for?
X, Y, and ZThe XYZ Affair (1797-1798) involved an American peace delegation in France, three agents of the French Foreign Minister (labeled as X, Y, and Z in President John Adams' initial communications with Congress), and the French Foreign Minister's demand for a bribe from the American delegation.
Why was there a XYZ Affair?
The XYZ Affair was a failed negotiation in which French diplomats demanded a bribe to help them fight a war against Great Britain and preserve their new government. The Quasi-War began when the United States began attacking French ships that were actively attempting to seize goods headed for Great Britain.
Why was the XYZ Affair considered an insult?
It angered the American people and many Europeans, especially the French. French leaders were offended because Britain was allowed to trade with the US, and they were not. Ultimately, the Jay Treaty prevented a war between the US and Great Britain, but it created another problem between the US and France.
