The most obvious symptoms of a bad motorcycle stator include no spark, weak spark, or intermittent spark (also known as misfiring). Hard starts and a poorly running engine can also be clues that your stator needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
What problems can a bad stator cause?
A bad stator can cause the spark plugs to misfire and the engine to run poorly. However, it will not completely disable the spark plugs and stop the engine from running. If you are experiencing these problems, you should also check your spark plugs.
Will an engine start with a bad stator?
It is possible for the engine to start if the stator is failing. However, it all depends on how it's failing. An intermittent failing stator will cause the engine to run like a pig or not at all.
Will bad CDI cause weak spark?
The CDI is not easy to diagnose because the observable symptoms of a faulty CDI box can lead to different directions. Sometimes, a bad CDI does not cause sparks at all. Again, when a CDI box is about to go bad, it can lead to misfires, issues with starting, rough running or even stall the motor.
Can a bad stator cause no spark on one cylinder?
A faulty stator can cause no spark problem on the outboard. So when there is no spark on the outboard do check the stator. If the problem is with the stator, replace it.
What causes a weak spark on a motorcycle?
A weak spark, or no-spark, problem may originate within one or more common ignition system components: Worn or damaged spark plug wire insulation. At high temperature, this problem can produce bucking or misfires. Dirty or worn spark plug.
How do you check for a bad stator?

What Causes Low spark?
Loss of spark is caused by anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. This includes worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad plug wires or a cracked distributor cap.
Can an ignition coil have a weak spark?
A weak spark is the first sign that the ignition coil may be failing. During acceleration, the air and fuel that is forced into the cylinders extinguish whatever spark there is, which causes the car to stall.
How do you know if your spark is weak?
A good spark will be blue-white and will be plainly visible in daylight. If a good spark is present, the problem is probably not in the ignition system. Check the fuel system and/or stark timing. Weak sparks are orange or red and may be hard to see in daylight.
What causes a stator to burn out?
A bad diode in a rectifier will dump AC current into a system. The AC current heats up the stator and the heat destroys the insulation and ultimately carbonizes it turning it into a low resistance brick.
What are the symptoms of a bad voltage regulator?

Can you fix a bad stator?
Fixing a stator usually involves unwinding and cleaning the original stator core, then rewinding it with a machine or carefully by hand. It starts with looking at the coil heads for damaged or burned wires, then cutting out the protective rubber coating from damaged coils.
Will a outboard motor run with a bad stator?
Because the stator is the power to generate the power needed by the engine to produce sparks and run. The outboard has only one or two smaller cylinders. If the stator fails, it will not even start and run!
What does a stator do on a small engine?
The stator on a riding lawn mower keeps the battery charged. The stator on a riding mower is located on top of the engine below the flywheel. As the flywheel turns over the top of the stator, electricity is created and sent back to the battery to keep it charged sufficiently.
What is the purpose of a stator on a ATV?
One problem part that can cause your ATV to stop working correctly is the stator. The stator works to recharge your ATV's battery as you drive it. Similar to the function of an alternator in a car, the stator is very important for ensuring the longevity of your ATV ride.

The stator also performs the extremely important role of generating the power for the spark plugs in the engine. Without a stator, your motorcycle will not get any spark at all as your battery is not capable of supplying the appropriate power levels to generate a spark. As a result, if your stator is going bad your motorcycle will run very ...

If you aren't getting any spark at the plugs, or if the spark looks or sounds weak, the problem is likely that the coil isn't operating properly. It's also possible that your spark plug wires are totally shot and the resistance is so high that it's eating the sparks, but that's not normally something that happens overnight. Good spark plug wires can last a decade. But to get a spark out of the ...
