i can't quote any code but i was always told gas co would shut off of they found repaired hx. weld would make metal brittle and crack next to weld.

If they do allow it in your area, they normally require a state certified welder do the work and have it tested afterwards. Even then its only a fix to get through the year. But I cannot stress enough what others have said.... doing this voids ALL warranties, manufacterur liability and certifications or listings the furnace has.
