In the case of a tub that is close to a stack, its drain can empty into a pipe that also serves as a vent. For a freestanding sink, code might allow a loop vent. If reventing is difficult and wet venting isn't allowed, you might have to install a separate vent pipe through the roof.

I'm adding two sinks to a basement of a fairly new house. The closest current waste stack is about 30 feet and two 90 degree angles away. However, about 5 feet away from both sink locations is my main vent that goes from the roof to under the basement floor. There is nothing upstream from this vent except for the first floor venting tying into it.

If the vent wall is opposite the drain line, use a reducing Y and a street elbow. The fittings can be pointed straight at the wall or at an angle, as needed.

Why are drain and vent lines important?

Drain and vent lines are important aspects of your home's sewer system. We'll show you why they matter and how to install them yourself. Installing drain and vent lines in your bathroom is a home project that can be completed in a weekend.

How much drop per foot for a drain pipe?

If you must run drainpipes across a floor, carefully calculate the amount of vertical space available; you must slope the drainpipe at 1/8 to 1/4 inch drop per foot .

How to run a horizontal pipe?

All fittings should be Ys or drain elbows so wastewater can flow easily. Hold the horizontal pipe so it's sloped at 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot and mark the existing pipe for cutting.

How to position vertical vents?

You might need another elbow (of any degree) to position the vertical vent where you want it.

How to run vent around obstruction?

If a medicine cabinet, window, or other obstruction prevents you from running a vent straight up, you'll have to turn a corner for a short distance, then turn again to head upward.

Why slope vents?

Some inspectors prefer horizontal vent pipes to be sloped so condensation can run back to the drainpipes; others don't consider this important. To be on the safe side, slope the vents.

How big is a DWV drain pipe?

The centerpiece of a DWV system is the main stack, usually a pipe 3 or 4 inches in diameter that runs straight up through the roof. A secondary stack, perhaps 2 or 3 inches in diameter, serves a branch of the system. Branch drainpipes of smaller diameter (typically 1-1/2 or 2 inches) carry water from specific fixtures to a stack.

How big should a drain line be for a kitchen sink?

Plan drain lines to minimize the possibility of clogs. The general rule is that smaller drainpipes (1-1/4 inches for bathroom sinks and 1-1/2 inches for kitchen sinks, for instance) lead to larger branch drains. These in turn lead to the main stack, which is the largest pipe of all (typically 4 inches). Because the main stack is also vertical, it will rarely clog.

Why Is Venting Necessary?

Open the vent cap on a plastic gas container and it flows smoothly. That's because the vent hole allows air to enter behind the flowing liquid, producing a quick, glug-free flow. Vent stacks in a household plumbing system work the same way.

What is a true vent?

A true vent is a vertical pipe attached to a drain line that travels through the roof with no water running through it. If a fixture is close to the stack and on the top floor, the upper part of the stack serves nicely as a vent. Many fixtures are not so conveniently located, however, and other solutions must be found.

How high should a vent be above flood level?

Other common ways to tie vents into a stack include sanitary crosses, revent alternatives, and loop vents installed at least 6 inches above flood level. Check local codes to see which methods are accepted in your area, then choose the method that requires the least number of holes or notches in studs.

What is DWV in plumbing?

Updated September 18, 2020. Drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipes carry waste and water smoothly out of the house without gurgles or fumes. This requires an air passageway behind the water. Vent pipes extend from the drainpipes up through the roof to provide that passage while also carrying odors out of the house.

Where is the revent pipe?

A revent pipe, also called an auxiliary vent, attaches to the drain line near the fixture and runs up and over to the main vent. It can attach directly behind the fixture or to the horizontal drain line. If two fixtures are on opposite sides of a wall, they can tie into the stack with a sanitary cross.

What is the difference between a drain and a vent?

The main difference between a waste/drainpipe and vent is that a drainpipe removes waste from fixtures while a vent removes sewer gases and allows in air for faster draining. A drainpipe is connected to the sewer lines or septic tank while a vent runs through the roof of the house.

What is a plumbing vent?

A plumbing vent or vent stack is one of the most important sections of the drain-waste-vent system. Actually, a plumbing vent is a requirement by the building code.

What happens if plumbing is not vented?

If the house plumbing is not vented or is poorly vented, fixtures will drain slowly and toilets will have a weak flush. As the fixtures drain, a vacuum will be created which causes the water in the fixture P-traps to be siphoned out. You will then have a sewer gas smell in your house/bathroom.

Why does my toilet smell like sewage?

A clogged vent forces sewer gases to flow out through drains and you will notice the toilet bubbling when flushed or the tub drain gurgling when the toilet is flushed.

What is drain waste vent?

In a simpler language, a drain-waste-vent system is a system for removal of waste from drains to the sewer lines or septic system, and introduction of air into the system (venting). Venting is vital in plumbing since it introduces air into the system which allows fixtures to drain fast and toilets to flush strongly.

What is a drain waste sewer system?

A drain-waste-vent system is the plumbing system which allows discharge of waste from fixtures to the city’s sewer lines or septic tank, as well removal of sewer gases from the system and introduction of air to speed up drainage. The system is made of fixtures, drainpipes, drain traps, plumbing vent, sewer cleanout, and sewer line/septic tank.

Why does my sink drain gurgle?

You will therefore notice that your fixtures will be draining slowly, and whenever you drain one fixture, an adjacent one will start gurgling, as the water in the trap is siphoned out due to the creation of a vacuum in the drain system.

What is the common name for plumbing vents?

The common name for these vents is air-admittance valves.

Why does ice form in vent pipe?

It happens because the vent pipe sticking through the roof gets as cold as the air temperature. If the air temperature is cold enough outdoors, the water vapor traveling up the pipe can freeze right to the sides of the pipe.

Are Vacuums in Plumbing Drains Bad?

Vacuums in plumbing drain lines are bad, very bad. You've possibly heard a vacuum getting satisfied if you've been in a bathroom when a tub or sink drain gurgles when you flush the toilet. At a friend's house, this would happen every time his washing machine would drain.

Can a Plumbing Vent Pipe be Small?

Vent pipes can be tiny and work. I'll never forget visiting a farm owned by another master plumber friend of mine. For fun, he vented all of the fixtures in a large bathroom with 1/2-inch copper water lines! Believe it or not, enough air was able to pass through that tiny pipe to satisfy each of the fixtures.

Should I Vent All Fixtures?

To be safe, extend a vent pipe from every fixture. Certain fixtures can be wet-vented, this means two fixtures share a common vent, but since I can't be at your house to mentor you on this complex technique, just install separate vents for each fixture. Be sure any vent line that has to run horizontally actually has a tilt to it so any condensate water that forms in the pipe drains down to the sewer or septic tank.

Do I Need a Full-Sized Vent Pipe?

Yes, full-sized vent pipes are a good idea. At least one of the primary 3, or 4-inch, drainage stacks should continue up and through the roof without changing the pipe size. Other smaller vent pipes from other fixtures can connect to this full-sized vent pipe.

What is the air that is pushed out of the way when water flows down the drain?

Air is pushed out of the way when water flows down drain pipes. This air must be replaced and that's what a plumbing vent pipe does. It brings air from outside into the entire plumbing system.

How Plumbing Venting Works?

By using a plumbing vent diagram, you can easily check the built-in pipes inside your walls. The best way is to start by checking the pipes under your sink. You’ll notice that there is a P-shaped tube that is located directly underneath the drain. That P-trap tube starts the ventilation process.

What is the drain pipe in the wall?

The drain pipes in your wall connect to your kitchen sink, tubs, showers, and other appliances that carry water away after you’re done with it. From there, there are slightly larger drain pipes into which water moves to the stack.

What is stack pipe?

The stack pipe that is part of your plumbing vent system leads through the roof and goes in the opposite direction to the main sewer lines. The gasses are vented up and outwards while the water and waste head down the pipe. That way, the stack allows fresh air to go through the piping to keep water running smoothly.

How important is it to place a fixture at a certain distance from the vent pipe?

No matter which vent system you choose, it is extremely important that your fixture is placed at a certain distance from the vent pipe. This is also known as critical distance, and it requires a precise calculation. Things that are important and play a big part in your home are the size of pipes, the type of fixture installed, and the number of wet vented fixtures.

Why do you need a re-vent for a toilet?

The true vent properly aligns with the stack that is located behind the toilet. Because the sink is placed further away from the toilet, a re-vent ensures that sewer gasses can escape .

Why is it important to plan out drain lines?

It is important to plan out the drain lines when it comes to installing the vents. That way, you will minimize the risk of clogging. The kitchen and bathroom drain system are smaller than the rest of the drain system. In this way, the kitchen and bathroom lead into much larger branch drain pipes (4-inch stack).

Where is the re-vent pipe?

Re-vent Pipes (Auxiliary Vent) are connected to the drain line that is near the fixture. They usually run over the main vent and upwards, which allows them to attach behind the fixture or horizontally to the drain line. If your sink is too far away from the main stack, this is a great option.

Why do plumbers install vents?

Plumbers install plumbing vent pipes to allow airflow into the plumbing system, thus enhancing the performance of other drains in the house. This is because all other piping using the house feature bends. Hence, they have to be attached to the venting system for optimal performance. Ensure that the plumbing vent is at the recommended 90-degree angle when using 45’s and 90’s to connect to the plumbing vent. Otherwise, if you don’t adhere to this rule, you risk having vapor locks in the plumbing vent, thus preventing proper venting.

How far away from drain can you cut a drain pipe?

Use a hacksaw to cut into the drainpipe you wish to vent. However, to guarantee the vent’s effectiveness, ensure that you cut within five feet of the drain P-trap.

How Many Elbows Can A Plumbing Vent Have?

Plumbing vents in the past used to be mostly straight, with a single 45-degree elbow. However, things have changed, and most local plumbing codes allow up to two 90-degree bends. This means that you can use two elbows in your plumbing vent. However, ensure to use elbows that feature a wider radius. While you may use vent piping, you can’t have the tight 90-degree elbow- which is also known as a vent elbow, especially if the joint is below water level (the level of your sink.)

Can Vent Pipes Have Bends?

There is no considerable harm in having ¼ bend in your vent pipe. Although vent pipes normally run plumb or level, you may need to include a bend, especially if you are working your way around an obstacle. However, whichever way you install your vent pipes, ensure that they remain dry. Also, you can install 90-degree bends in vent pipes.

How far should a vent run horizontally?

Since the vent ought to run horizontally for twenty to twenty-five feet across the attic to the vertical pipe passing through the roof, you can use a sanitary tee when connecting a horizontal run. This includes a waste arm to a vertical riser or vent stack.

How far should vent lines run?

Moreover, the horizontal vent should not run more than 20-25ft across the attic.

How far above the roof should a vent be?

Research by Fantastic Viewpoint suggests that in order to achieve the second function, the top of the vent must be at least one foot above the roof and at least ten feet from windows or doors. Moreover, the research advises that while the vent can pass through the roof; it can also pass through the wall, rising above the roof. Here are some important instructions to follow if you want to route the vent out of a wall.

When a trap connects to a vertical drain, what is the fitting?

When a trap connects to a vertical drain, install a tee fitting. A “sanitary tee” gives the waste arm a slight downward slope, enough for good flow, but not enough to create a siphon.

Can you join ABS pipe to PVC pipe?

Note: Joining ABS (black) pipe to PVC (white) may look like a blunder, but it’s actually allowed by many local codes— as long as you use “universal” cement to glue them together.

Can you connect a sewer trap to a vertical drain?

Connecting a trap to a vertical drain with a wye fitting and a 45-degree elbow seems like a good idea. But it’s not. As water drains down the steep slope at the wye, it can create a siphon effect such that water will be sucked out of the trap. And the empty trap will allow sewer gas to flow into your home. Note: Joining ABS (black) pipe ...
