Remember: the goal isn't to omit one food, but to restrict carb intake to about 50 grams per day (depending on your weight, height, and activity level) which helps your body get into ketosis

Ketosis

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy. Generally, ketosis occurs when the liver is metabolizing fatty acids or ethanol at a high rate in the absence of glucose and converting the product acetyl-CoA into ketone bodies. The first ketone body to be produced …

Using Ketosis to Get the Results You Want: FAQ

Whether you're strictly looking to live a healthier lifestyle or you're ready to shed some unwanted pounds, altering your diet so you can reach and maintain ketosis can help you achieve your desired results.

What Kicks You Out of Ketosis & How to Avoid It

Having trouble achieving or staying in ketosis on the ketogenic diet? You're not alone. With carbs hidden in unsuspecting places in the Standard American Diet (SAD), it's not a surprise that getting into and staying in ketosis can be a challenge.

What Foods Kick You Out of Ketosis?

Now that you've been doing the keto diet for a while, you might be craving a cheat day. Cheat days can be enticing on every diet, regardless of how easy or challenging the diet is. While we don't recommend cheat days on this diet, we understand that they happen.

How You Can Tell if You've Kicked Yourself Out of Ketosis

Beyond testing your urine daily (or even after each meal), there are a few things that may come up if you've eaten something that kicked you out of ketosis. After a long time of being fat-adapted, your body is extra sensitive to carbohydrates and may react differently than it did before you started the keto diet.

Ketone Testing

It might seem like overkill, but the only way to know for sure if you're fat-adapted is to test your ketone levels. There are a number of ketone meter options, but the easiest way to test is with keto strips. Keto strips test your urine for ketones and can give you a rough idea of whether or not you've achieved ketosis.

How to Get Back Into and Stay in Ketosis

The good news is that it's a lot easier to get back into ketosis after you've been fat-adapted for three to six months than it is to start from scratch at the beginning of the diet. There are a few steps you can take to help you get back on track after a cheat day or meal where your carb count got a little out of control.

How to Get into Ketosis in the First Place

Getting into ketosis is a step by step process that can feel different for every individual. There are a few options here, depending on how well you tolerate the changes required in your diet.

Common Foods to Avoid

The keto diet is all about following a low-carb, high-fat diet so that your body will burn fat. There are many foods that you can eat, which is one of the best things about this diet. However, you need to be familiar with the foods that you’re not allowed.

What to Look Out for When Eating Out

Eating out can be hard when you are dieting. Fortunately, you have many options on the keto diet. You can actually enjoy your meal and stay on track. The hardest thing is being caught by surprise. What should you order? How do you know? Rather than being put on the spot at the restaurant, plan your meal before you go.

Main Points to Look Out for When Searching Ingredients on Food Packages

It can be overwhelming to look at the food labels in the grocery store. Just reading the list leads to all kinds of other questions.

1. Hidden Carbs

The first and most crucial step of getting your body into a state of ketosis is cutting out and limiting your carbohydrate intake.

2. Sugar Substitutes

Using sugar substitutes and sweeteners are kind of related to the previous hidden carbs section.

3. Not eating enough fat

Other than consuming too many carbs, not eating enough fat can also throw you off balance and create issues. Dietary fat is essential on Keto primarily for two reasons:

4. Cheating

Unlike other diets, being on a Ketogenic diet isn’t trying to eat healthy “most of the time.” It’s about consistency. Your body has to make a complete metabolic change, from using glucose to running on fat for energy. And that’s something that takes time.

5. Eating too much protein

For some odd reason, people often believe Keto is a high-protein diet.

Nutritional Ketosis is Most Effective as a Lifestyle Change

Next, switching to a low-carbohydrate lifestyle is literally a “lifestyle change.” It requires that you understand a few basic ketosis principles. And, it takes the average person 3-6 months to really wrap their head around what this lifestyle means .

Nutritional Ketosis is a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet

First, this is a low carbohydrate diet. For weight loss, I usually ask people to lower their carbohydrate intake to less than 2o grams per day. How do you do that? (A copy of my diet is accessible through my membership site HERE .) You’ve got to begin by restricting all carbohydrates to less than 20 grams per day.

To Effectively Maintain Nutritional Ketosis, You must Moderate Protein

Second, this is a low carbohydrate, moderate protein, high fat lifestyle. N0 . it is NOT a high protein diet! That is a misnomer picked up from the “Atkins era” and is false. Protein is essential for the building and maintaining of muscle, connective tissue and a number of other enzymatic reactions in your body.

Nutritional Ketosis is a High Fat Diet

Third, this is a high fat lifestyle. Yes, I want you to INCREASE your fat intake. I’m going to repeat that, again, just for clarity, . . . . INCREASE your fat intake. Increase it to more than 50% of your total calories, . . . 70% of your total calories if you can do it. Not enough fat is a common ketosis killer.

Check Your Sweeteners At the Door

The fourth common ketosis killer and culprit in halting your weight loss is artificial sweeteners. There are quite a few of them. Most of them WILL cause an insulin response (exactly what we don’t want for weight loss) with minimal to no rise in blood sugar. Raising blood sugar doesn’t matter, if the insulin is being stimulated .

Ketosis Killing Medications

The sixth culprit in halting weight loss is medications. Please talk to your doctor before making ANY changes in your medications as suddently stopping them can be hazardous to your health. Those highest on my list for stopping your weight loss are Glyburide (glipizide), insulin, & steroids like prednisone.

Estrogen

The seventh common culprit in halting weight loss is a lack of estrogen in menopausal or post-menopausal women. About 20% of women that I see in my practice who are over 55 years old, need some degree of estrogen replacement before they are able to lose weight.

Will a cheat day throw me out of ketosis?

There's no getting around this one: Yes, you will fall out of fat burning mode.

How long does it take to get back into ketosis?

The amount of time it takes to get back into that coveted fat-burning zone will vary based on the person, but it generally takes one to three days. “Getting back in is likely different for each person, and it depends on the level of carb restriction you choose to do,” Hultin says.

So should you cheat?

It depends on various factors, including whether your keto diet is doctor-mandated.
