Temperature
Tomato plants prefer warm weather and should not be planted outdoors until the temperature remains at a steady 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Planting tomatoes outdoors too early or in a greenhouse that is too cool can cause the leaves of young plants to turn purple.
Phosphorus Deficiency
Tomatoes suffering from phosphorus deficiency exhibit symptoms such leaves showing purple veins or with an overall purple color. Other symptoms include a bronze coloring of leaves and a red color along vein margins. Managing this problem requires adding phosphorus to the soil.
Curly Top Virus
Curly top virus symptoms vary by host plant; affected tomatoes show symptoms including curling leaves, veins turning purple on the underside of leaves and a light green discoloration. Other symptoms include stunted growth and distorted leaves. The beet leafhopper transmits curly top virus.
Psyllid Infestation
Psyllids are small insects that can do extensive damage to tomatoes and other crops. These pests inject their toxic saliva into plant leaves and can kill young tomato plants.The leaves of affected plants turn yellow and the veins turn purple, a condition known as psyllid yellows.
Plant Growth
Blueberries are bushy shrubs that can live 30 years or more and grow 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, depending on the cultivar. They have shallow roots that are easily damaged by cultivation. Tomatoes, on the other hand, are an annual crop that die every fall at the first hint of frost.
Soil pH
Another reason blueberries and tomatoes are unlikely bedfellows is because of their soil requirements. Blueberries need an acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Tomatoes grow best with a soil pH between 5.5 and 7.5, according to the Colorado State University Extension.
Growing Conditions
Both blueberries and tomatoes need full sun and consistent moisture to thrive, but there the similarities end. Tomatoes need regular applications of fertilizer to produce their succulent fruit.
Recommendations
In general, it's best to plant annual vegetable crops together and give perennial food crops their own space. Blueberries don't compete well with other plants, so plant them alone and mulch them with 2 to 4 inches of wood chips. Tomatoes can be successfully interplanted with most vegetable crops.
