What is the purpose of exterior stain?

One of the important functions of an exterior stain is to block ultraviolet sunlight, which deteriorates the surface cells of wood and turns the wood gray. Not all exterior stains are heavily pigmented, but those that are may not be the best choice for kitchen cabinets. Semi-transparent and solid stains are essentially thin paints, and while they might look attractive in a rough-sawn cedar fence, they might not spread evenly on an interior hardwood surface. In addition, they will probably peel if your cabinets already have a finish.

What is the difference between exterior stain and base stain?

Exterior stains differ in their base solvent -- which is either water or a volatile petroleum distillate -- the amount of pigment they contain and the mildew- and rot-killing additives they contain.

Do you need clear coat for semi transparent stain?

Durability -- Semi-transparent and solid exterior stains are designed to cure to a washable, scratch-resistant that needs no clear coat. You'll need a clear-coat if you're using a transparent stain, but that's true whether the stain is an exterior or interior one.

Can you use exterior stain on cabinets?

As a general rule, use exterior stains outside and interior stains indoors, but what's a rule if you can't break it? Exterior stains are formulated to make wood last longer in areas of high moisture and intense sunlight. If your kitchen is such an area, you might consider using an exterior stain on your cabinets, but choose the right one. You don't want mildewcides contaminating your kitchen, nor do you want a heavily pigmented stain peeling from your hardwood-faced plywood.

Can you use water based stain on decking?

Adhesion Problems -- The exterior stains that are safest for your kitchen are water-based, and they are formulated to cover highly porous decking, siding and fencing. If your cabinets are finished, you'll probably have to strip the finish to ensure adhesion, and even so, you may still have problems with maple or equally close-grained wood species.

What type of paint is used on stucco?

According to Benjamin Moore Paints, most exterior acrylic latex paint will work on various exterior surfaces, including stucco, wood siding, fiber cement and brick. Though increasingly less used, true exterior enamel is an oil-based paint that requires turpentine or mineral spirits for clean-up.

Does interior paint stand up to the elements?

Interior paint doesn’t contain the same resins, fungicides and other additives as exterior paint so it will not stand up to the elements, even when applied to a sheltered spot like a front door on a covered porch.

Is it illegal to paint with oil based paint?

Because of their toxic fumes, true enamel or oil-based paints are a big no-no for interiors and depending on where you live, may be illegal for both interior and exterior use. “As VOCs vaporize, they cause accelerated depletion of the earth’s ozone, resulting in ground level ozone,” explains Savino. “The EPA has banned the use of oil paints in several states with high ozone levels because of ingredients (oil, mineral spirits) that have higher levels of VOCs than water-based paint.”

Is acrylic paint scratch resistant?

Most varieties are engineered to be washable and scratch resistant. Most exterior paint is also acrylic latex, so it’s also water-soluble when wet, but it has added resin to make it weather-resistant. It may be called acrylic enamel, but this refers to the gloss finish.

Can you paint outside indoors?

If you're wondering whether you can use exterior paint indoors — or vice versa — we've got your answer: You can, but you probably shouldn't.

Can You Use Exterior Paint Indoors?
