You shouldn't need to use sealant on the gaskets. Most exhaust manifold gaskets either come with their own sealant (like Fel-Pro's do with the silver looking stuff), or they are metal and don't require it either.Aug 9, 2015

How much does it cost to replace a manifold gasket?

To replace the right side exhaust manifold gasket, the labor time is estimated at 1.6 hours. A factory manifold gasket for the right costs about $26, and an Apex gasket costs about $16. With hardware, the job would cost about $206 using factory parts, or about $196 using aftermarket parts.

How do you replace the exhaust manifold gasket?

  • Attach the new exhaust manifold gasket onto the studs on the cylinder head
  • Apply anti-seize to the studs on the cylinder heads that attach the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head

Do you need gasket sealer for headers?

You shouldn't need to put any sealer on the header gaskets at all. If you are having leaks I would use some copper gaskets. If no leaks you can use a regular composition gasket dry. I use the FelPro 1444 laminated gasket on my small block heads.

Can you use gasket maker on exhaust manifold?

This chemical gasket maker can be used in replacement of pre-cut gaskets and is ideal for high-temperature applications such as the exhaust manifold, header, turbochargers and slip-fit exhaust parts.

Can I use silicone on exhaust?

You can use silicone on the join to the head as it is cooled by the head itself and does not get that hot. The Y piece joins generally run to hot for even the hi temp silicone and it burns off and the join then tends to leak. The last join to the rear muffler is normally cool enough again to use silicone I have found.

What is a burned gasket?

The burned gasket is the cheap Mr Gasket header gasket . Go purchase the correct Felpro # MS90000 and use NO sealer . You may consider having the manifold ground/machined flat if you thing it is warped . .

Does cheapo gasket fit?

The cheapo gasket looks like it doesn't actually fit. If a gasket isn't clamped correctly, IE hanging off the side, of the application it is much more prone to blowing out. No matter what you are using the gasket on. I've seen fitment problems like that on aftermarket headers, but not factory manifolds. I've gotten some of those Mr.Gasket gaskets with a pair of blackjack headers. The left side fit perfectly but the right not at all. I immediately thought ill-fitting headers, but it turned out to be the gasket for some reason. A Fel-Pro metalized gasket fit much better.#N#The orange stuff is "High Temp Copper RTV" silicone sealer. It appears the mechanic was using it to compensate for a mismatch problem between the gasket and head. Seems unusual to have to do such a thing on stock looking parts. The Hi-Temp RTV is very much a viable solution though. Drag racers discovered years ago that you could use the stuff as a complete substitute for exhaust gaskets, which saved them a dollar or two on engines subject to regular teardown.#N#I've used it myself in oddball situations and have been surprised how well it held up in the long term. I don't know of another acceptable substitute though, including your hi-tack stuff. Manifolds can get hot enough to light a cigarette off of, very few sealants out there can withstand that sort of heat very long.#N#I advise getting a good pair of gaskets (NOT Mr.Gasket-Felpro is OK). When you get everything loose use the gasket to check your cylinder head ports. Don't just assume everything is OK and a simple gasket replacement will fix it, that's obviously already happened. Take your time and see if you can spot where gasket coverage is too "thin" that will make it prone to blowing out. Also check it up against the manifold too. If possible, checking just the manifold on the head without the gasket might reveal something. I suspect somewhere along the line something will catch your eye as not looking quite right. Then we get to figure out how, why, and what to do about it.#N#I have once seen a head that someone ported too enthusiastically that no gasket in the store would have sealed. Big rust pits in the sealing surface of a manifold, hidden cracks, etc. You never know. Hopefully it's something simple.

How to clean rust off manifold?

If there is a buildup of rust on the mating surface, take a piece of fine (300 or finer grit), put it on the broad side of a scrap piece of 2x4 board about 4" to 6" long, and lightly sand the area. You don't want to stay in one area too long. You are just trying to knock down any major areas. When you get done with it, clean it off with some of that brake clean I saw in your other picture, wipe it down with a cloth, and you should be golden. The reason to use a flat piece of board is so that your mating surface is maintained as flat. If you don't, you could have slight low spots in your manifold which could allow for exhaust leakage.

Do exhaust manifold gaskets need sealant?

You shouldn't need to use sealant on the gaskets. Most exhaust manifold gaskets either come with their own sealant (like Fel-Pro's do with the silver looking stuff), or they are metal and don't require it either. I believe sealants (such as high temp Permatex Copper) will just burn off anyway, because the heat at the head/header interface is far beyond what they can take.
