What is the EU regulation for delayed flights?

Luckily, I was familiar with EU Regulation 261/2004, which was implemented to regulate airline obligations and compensate passengers for flight delays and cancellations. The regulation is robust, far-reaching, and relatively consumer-friendly. It entitles passengers to compensation for various issues relating to their flights, up to €600 for delayed flights (Unfortunately, the US doesn’t have a corresponding regulation governing compensation for delayed flights. It does have some regulations that cover situations like when you are involuntary denied boarding).

Why was the flight delayed at Zurich?

The delay wasn’t weather related or related to air traffic control at Zurich. Instead, the aircraft United was going to use had landed from its previous flight with a mechanical issue, a broken weather radar. United didn’t have a spare part (or a spare aircraft) in Zurich and therefore needed to fly a new part in from London, ultimately delaying our departure by more than eight hours.

Can you escalate a flight delay?

You can escalate if you aren’t satisfied with the airline’s response. If the airline doesn’t respond in a timely manner or refuses to compensate you, you can escalate the matter and lodge a complaint with the relevant national authority in the country where the flight delay took place or submit a claim to arbitration or small claims court. The EU site has easy to navigate links so you can find the appropriate person.

Is compensation automatic?

Compensation is not automatic. You need to actively request compensation from the airline. The EU has a good template that you can use to send to your airline carrier. It helps to stay organized and keep your flight information, ticket receipt, and boarding pass.
