how do you calculate pocket depth

If we routed a 1.0″ deep neck pocket, the top of the fretboard would be flush with the top of the guitar. We need to raise that fretboard up 3/8″, so we reduce our too-deep 1.0″ neck pocket by 3/8″ and end up with a pocket depth of 5/8″. For the math-impaired: 1.0″ (or 8/8″) – 3/8″ = 5/8″.

To measure a pocket we use a periodontal probe. The probe allows us to measure in millimeters from the top of the pocket to the bottom of the pocket. The bottom of the pocket is the area where the tissue is connected through ligaments to the root.

How to measure dentogingival complex?

This is measured by sounding of the alveolar bone , a dental maneuver performed with a periodontal probe under local anaesthesia utilizing increased probing pressure. In healthy natural teeth, the dentogingival complex measures approximately 3.0mm at both the buccal and lingual sites. Interdental sites measure 4.5-5.0mm due to the support provided to the interdental soft tissues by adjacent teeth. The clinical relevance of the dentoginigval complex (Dentogingival Complex Measurement — DGM) is much greater than a measure of periodontal attachment (a derived measurement combining probing depth and distance of the gingival margin relative to the CEJ) or biologic width, the latter that cannot be measured at chair side.

What is the measurement of the extent of periodontal support?

Another measurement of the extent of the periodontal support that is often reported, but is occasionally misinterpreted is the clinical attachment level (CAL). This is the measurement of the position of the soft tissue in relation to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) that is a fixed point that does not change throughout life, albeit at times it is hard to visualize (e.g. in case of abfraction lesions or chemical root erosions). Two measurements are used to calculate the CAL: the probing depth and the distance from the gingival margin to the CEJ.

Can DGM be measured without microwounding?

However, the limitation in routinely measuring the DGM is that the patient must be anesthetized to permit bone sounding and the repeated micro-wounding of the connective attachment may outweigh the benefit of elucidating the measurement . As such, the measurement of the DGM is generally reserved for pre-prosthetic surgery. Emerging dental technologies are promising in that this measurement could be achieved without micro-wounding.

Does probing reveal the state of health of the area being measured?

Periodontal probing continues to be a key element in the diagnosis of periodontal disease and this maneuver is performed hundreds of thousand times a day in dental offices across the world. However, a probing depth alone does not reveal the complete state of health of the area being measured. Clinicians need additional information about the health of the periodontal tissues that complement the probing data.

What is depth of cut?

Depth of Cut is the length of the side of the flutes that are actually cutting. So, if you’re doing a pocket in several steps or layers, it is the thickness of the current layer you’re cutting and not the total depth of the pocket. Depth of Cut is also referred to as Axial Depth of Cut.

How Do Depth of Cut and Cut Width Affect Cutting Speed and Feed Rate?

A cutting tool has to be able to clear chips that it cuts. If they’re not cleared, they will be cut again and again. In that sense, they compete with the end mill’s ability to cut new material.

Can CNC software calculate cutting speed?

Most CNC’ers calculate Cutting Speed and Feed Rate using science . Unfortunately, most CNC’ers have no scientific way to choose Depth of Cut and Stepover. Your choice of Depth of Cut and Stepover will limit Cutting Speed and Feed Rate. That means we can unlock a lot of potential by adopting a more scientific approach to Depth of Cut and Stepover.

Do you rely on guesswork or outdated rules of thumb for Depth of Cut or Stepover?

Depth of cut and stepover (width of cut) are crucial variables when milling pockets, profiling, facing, and any other machining operation where you’ll be cutting with the flutes on the side of a cutting tool. Other important variables are the machine’s capabilities, the material to be cut, and a description of the tool to be used. The rest can be determined from those variables.
