  1. Ensure the top surface of the beam and block structure is levelled with grout or a levelling topping.
  2. If a radon barrier is required, lay this over the grouting layer and extend it across the wall cavity to the outer leaf.
  3. Lay the Mannok Therm Floor / MF PIR boards or Mannok's EPS insulation boards on top of the structural deck or radon barrier. ...

How do you install insulation on a beam?

Insulation is usually positioned on top of the beam and block floor, a concrete topping or screed is then laid onto the insulation. An upstand perimeter insulation is installed around the edge of the concrete topping or screed in order to prevent thermal bridging.

What is the best way to insulate a concrete floor?

The lighter the block, the greater its contribution to the thermal performance of the floor; it’s also possible to use infill blocks made from expanded polystyrene insulation. Installing thermal insulation below a concrete deck is not usually an option, so rigid insulation is installed above the deck.

What is the thermal performance of beam and block flooring?

Resistance to passage of heat. The beam and block floor offers good flexibility with thermal performance. High levels of rigid insulation can be installed over the beam and block floor. However, if EPS blocks are used, the floor system can achieve excellent thermal performance.

How do you prepare a beam and block wall for construction?

Ensure the top surface of the beam and block structure is levelled with grout or a levelling topping. 2. If a radon barrier is required, lay this over the grouting layer and extend it across the wall cavity to the outer leaf. 3.

What goes on top of block and beam floor?

Insulation is usually positioned on top of the beam and block floor, a concrete topping or screed is then laid onto the insulation.

How do you lay Celotex on block and beam floor?

Celotex insulation is easy to install in beam and block floors. The boards simply need to be cut to size and fitted snugly between the beams. Once in place, the joints can be sealed with a vapour layer control (VCL) to prevent any air leakage.

Where does DPC go on block and beam floor?

Floor construction The precast concrete beams are laid in rows with the ends supported by the blockwork inner leaf of a cavity wall. A damp-proof course (DPC) is located between the beams and supporting blocks to prevent rising damp (see Figure 1).

Does Celotex require an air gap?

When Celotex is fitted between roof rafters, you need to ensure you leave an air gap of roughly 25mm – 50mm between the Celotex boards and the roof itself. This is to ensure air can circulate freely and to avoid damp or condensation.

Do you need DPC under block and beam?

Do the floor beams require a dpc under the bearing ends? We do recommend that the bearing wall be protected by a suitable dpc at some point below the bearing level of the floor beams. This is a requirement of our BBA certificate and is to protect the pre-stressed steel within the beam.

What is the minimum void under a block and beam floor?

150mmTypically a minimum void of 150mm (225mm in heavy clay soils) must be maintained between underside of the floor beam and the ground surface. This should be confirmed with local authority building control.

Do you need to grout a block and beam floor?

It is important that blocks are not cut or drilled in such a way as to impair their performance. The whole floor area must be grouted with a 3:1 sand/cement mix (using coarse sand) as soon as possible after the fixing of the beams and blocks has been completed.

Do block and beam floors bounce?

Some beam and block floors do have a bounce, especially if they are at their upper span limit of around 5m. e beams are pretensioned precast reinforced concrete and they have a slight camber in the middle. Some are designed to settle when the insulation and floor screed has been loaded and cast.

What is the maximum span for a block and beam floor?

For a 125mm x 150mm beam section the centre is 530mm. For a block with a density of 1970kg/m3 and an superimposed load of 2.5 kN/m2 the maximum clear span is 3.94m. For superimposed loads other than 1.5kN/m2 using 650kg/m3 blocks, it is highly recommended that the user refers to the block manufacturer for guidance.

What is the mix for slurry on a block and beam floor?

A 1:4 cement sand slurry mix grout should be well brushed into the floor. Prior to grouting, the floor should be thoroughly cleaned and wetted to ensure effective seal.

How to Insulate Your Pier and Beam Home

One of the challenges to insulating your flooring in this type of construction is installation. It needs to be done right so birds and animals do not make nests out of those insulation materials.

The Importance of Insulation

You may not have thought about it very much but insulation can help you save a lot of money and be energy efficient. Having the right insulation in the right spots will cut your heating and cooling costs significantly.

Some Final Words

A word to the wise. Make sure you get the right insulation for your pier and beam home. Good insulation means that your family is being protected from the elements and they get to remain healthier longer.

We are about to insulate a block and beam floor with 100mm celotex and then put 65mm screed on top of that. Bit worried that the block and beam floor is a bit uneven and that the insulation may move when laid on top of it ... and crack the screed.

gillpsimonb

It's just uneven - the rain sits in puddles on it in the lower patches - so not level all over.

gillpsimonb

just worried that the sheets of insulation may not lie flat - so may move especially when the screed is actually being put down on it.
