from the main beam of the plow at a 90 degre angle, measure from the tip of the shear to the line in line with the end of the shear. You can also uas a square fron the end of the shear at a 90 to the point and measure the distance on the square.

Measure perpendicular (90 degrees) to the direction of travel, not along the angle of the plow bottom.
Can JD plows be bolted together?
I believe at least one model of JD plow allows things to be bolted together differently for different spacing so it doesn't work so good on that one.

Where do you measure on a plow to determine if you have 16 or 18 inch bottoms? I bought a IH 720 5 bottom plow last January and was told it was 16 in bottoms. I measures from the plow point to the coulter ( lined up straight with bottom) and got 18 in.

I don't have a picture, but you should be able to measure from a point on the frame/beam that the bottom bolts to over to the same spot on the next bottom.

measuring from plow point to the coulter just gives you a rough idea. A lot of the time the coulter shaft is ofset an inch or two away from the plow point.

Lay a straight edge along the landslide either forward or backwards & then measure the distance from it to the tip of the share of the next bottom. On older plows many times there was a brace that the coulter bolted to. If your plow is built that way you can measure the distance between the braces to determine bottom width.
