Season the rib

When you season the rib, avoid adding too much of the spices and flavours. Keeping it more simple and basic can also yield a finger-licking smoked rib. Overdone flavouring and seasoning can drown out the actual natural flavour of ribs. They taste equally better with sauce or no sauce.

When you purchase a rack of ribs it comes with a thin film on the back that you will want to remove. Try using a small knife to life a part of the film of the ribs. Once you have gotten a grabbable piece separated, grab a hold with a paper towel, for traction and then pull the membrane off.

4. Marinate or Dry Brine

Next, you’ll have to decide if you want to marinate the ribs or not. If you decide not to marinate then you will need to dry brine your ribs, but we will talk more about that later.

5. Add A Rub

The best kind of rub to use on ribs is a dry rub. This is because a dry rub will create a tasty crust on the side of the meat. Like marinades, rubs can be bought from the store and there are thousands of options. However, you can also chose to make your own as long as it includes pepper and sugar.

7. Pick A Smoking Method

There are several different methods for smoking ribs and these will work on any type of smoker not just an electric smoker.

Step1: Prepare the Ribs

The first step is to prepare ribs for your best electric smoker. In this, remove the ribs membrane to ensure that the BBQ pork ribs will provide tender smoked. It’s necessary to remove this rubbery layer because it makes the meat tough and inedible if cooked with it.

Step2: Trim the Rib

After removing the ribs membrane, move on to the next step: the trimming of a rib. Here you have to compare the ribs length against the smoker; this ensures that the ribs get complete smoking coverage.

Step3: Rub the Rib

A Simple Recipe for BBQ Ribs smoking

Total time: Four hours and thirty minutes is the total time to smoke the ribs, in which preparing time will be thirty minutes, and cook times are four hours.

How to prepare a Rib?

First, remove the membrane gently from it by inserting a blade knife between the skin and rib rack. Pull away the membrane.

Step 2: Prep the Electric Smoker

Prepare your electric smoker for a temperature between 225° to 250° Fahrenheit. We prefer 240° personally, but it doesn’t matter which you choose as long as you have a consistent cooking temperature throughout the duration of this process.

Step 3: Prep the Ribs

Take out the St Louis ribs and remove them from the packaging they came in. Remove any paper, cling wrap, etc. If you are cooking more than one pack of ribs place each pack on a wire rack so that air can circulate around all sides to help dry off excess moisture

Step 4: Apply Dry Rub Seasoning to Ribs

Apply an even coating of your favorite dry rub seasoning over all sides of the ribs. Apply it as evenly as possible, but don’t worry too much about patting off any excess or brushing away loose particles.

Step 5: Place Ribs in Smoker

Place the St Louis ribs on the top rack down fat side up with meaty side touching grate surface first. This allows the meat to cook evenly.

Step 6: Smoke Ribs for Four Hours

Once your smoker is up to temperature and you have placed the ribs inside, set a timer for four hours. We usually check the meat every hour after that mark just to make sure it’s cooking as expected and not drying out too much or falling off of the bone early.

Step 7: Apply BBQ Sauce to Ribs

Once your ribs have smoked for about six total hours, apply an even coating of your favorite barbecue sauce over all sides of the meaty part (not the bone side).

Step 8: Remove Ribs from Smoker, Let Rest and Cut into Individual Slabs

Remove ribs from the smoker and let rest for about 15 minutes before cutting into individual slabs. This allows the meat to re-settle, cool slightly, and also absorb some of that BBQ sauce flavor.

How to make the BEST electric smoker ribs

A couple of years ago, I gave my husband an electric smoker for Father’s Day. I’ll admit, there may have been an ulterior motive behind this gift! We had spent a weekend visiting with family in Arkansas and my brother-in-law served us the most amazing ribs he cooked in an electric smoker.

Getting started

Obviously, the first thing you need is an electric smoker. I can’t speak for other brands, but I can tell you that we are very happy with our Masterbilt model. Regardless of the brand or model you choose, before you smoke the first rack of ribs the smoker should be cleaned and pre-seasoned.

Prep the ribs

Smoking ribs is a process and takes some planning. The night before you plan to cook, you’ll need to rinse the ribs under cool water, pat them completely dry with paper towels, remove the membrane, and apply the dry rub.

The cooking process for electric smoker ribs

Smoking these ribs is an 8-hour process, but with an electric smoker you won’t need to tend to them all that time. Once the smoker is preheated, the ribs will cook for 4 hours without being interrupted. This gives you plenty of time to go do something else as well as make the mop sauce and barbecue sauce you’ll use in the next phase of smoking.
