What is a kendrick extrication device (ked)?

The Kendrick Extrication Device is a specialized piece of equipment used by Emergency Medical Responders and First Responders in British Columbia. The KED allows rescuers to apply spinal motion restriction to a patient with suspected spinal injuries, while in a seated position.

What is included in the kendrick extrication kit?

Includes a wrap vest, Adjust A-pad neck roll, two headbands and carrying case. The Kendrick Extrication device is used in a prehospital setting to stabilize patients complaining of neck or back pain after a car crash. Once the KED device slides into place, it is secured to a strap around the victim to prevent movement.

How do you use a KED?

A KED is typically used only on hemodynamically stable victims; unstable victims are extricated using rapid extrication techniques without the prior application of the KED. Once the KED is slid into position, it is secured to the victim with straps in order to prevent movement. The first strap that is secured is the middle torso strap.

What is the ked used for in rescue work?

The KED allows rescuers to apply spinal motion restriction to a patient with suspected spinal injuries, while in a seated position. A lesser known, but very effective use for the KED is to create a "pelvic binding" splint, to support a suspected pelvic fracture during movement or extrication of the patient.

When would you use a KED extrication device?

The KED is supposed to be used on patients with neck and back pain after trauma. If the application of the device is causing greater movement of the patient, then the utility of this device should be called into question. The KED can add considerable cost to an emergency medical service provider.

When applying the KED extrication device on your patient the torso is secured?

The first strap that is secured is the middle torso strap. According to the KED users' manual securing this strap secures the greatest area of the device and therefore provides the greatest stability while securing the rest of the device.

What is a KED in EMT?

The Kendrick Extrication Device (KED) is designed to immobilize a. patient found in a sitting position. It is most commonly used in. automobile accidents where the patient is stable.

Why is it important to used KED before extrication of a victim during traffic accidents?

One advantage of the KED is that it provides strong lifting points and so may be of value when a heavy casualty is wearing flimsy clothing that will tear when used for lifting. Applying a KED can add 5 minutes or more to the extrication time, and so the value of using one must be judged in each case.

When would you use the rapid extrication technique How do you do this?

The rapid extrication technique is designed to move a patient in a series of coordinated movements from the sitting position to the supine position on a long backboard while always maintaining stabilization and support for the head/neck, torso, and pelvis.

How do you backboard a patient?

Place hands in appropriate position, then roll patient onto backboard as one unit. Position patient in centre of backboard. Secure body to backboard using appropriate strapping devices in correct sequence (chest, hips, feet). Pad any natural hollows, then secure patient's head to backboard using appropriate equipment.

How do you use a short spine board?

With the patient sitting forward slightly, slide the short backboard behind the patient and between the arms of the rescuer holding manual inline stabilization. Once the short backboard is properly positioned behind the patient and all straps are in position move the patient back to the device.

What is the purpose of spine boarding?

A spinal board, is a patient handling device used primarily in pre-hospital trauma care. It is designed to provide rigid support during movement of a person with suspected spinal or limb injuries.

How do you use a short board device?

With the patient sitting forward slightly, slide the short backboard behind the patient and between the arms of the rescuer holding manual inline stabilization. Once the short backboard is properly positioned behind the patient and all straps are in position move the patient back to the device.

When carrying a patient up or down the stairs?

Try to carry heavy patients up a stairway with two people at the top, shoulder to shoulder, and two at the bottom of the stretcher. Always carry patients head first up the stairs and feet first down the stairs. Try to use a stair chair if the patient's condition allows it.

When would a rapid extrication be appropriate?

The patient needs immediate intervention that requires a supine position. The patient's condition requires immediate transport to the hospital. The patient blocks the EMT-B's access to another seriously injured patient. Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 9th ed, 2005, p186, Table 6-2.

Description

Typically there are two head straps, three torso straps, and two legs straps which are used to adequately secure the KED to the victim.

Application

The device can be quickly and easily inserted into the seat of a vehicle by a single rescuer, allows access to the airway and conforms to any body size. A KED is typically used only on hemodynamically stable victims; unstable victims are extricated using rapid extrication techniques without the prior application of the KED.

Value

There is controversy about whether the use of a KED is actually appropriate in prehospital care. A 2015 article in the Journal of Paramedic Practice said that although the device has been used since the 1970s, its "overall appropriateness in patient care should be viewed with caution" and there is a "lack of evidence to support its use".

Rapid extrication without a KED

During rapid extrication, the patient is not immobilized by a KED, but rather taken directly out of the car onto a back board. Reasons for using this technique include:

Vorenus

In my service we dont have vacum stretchers or splints so we use good old hard splints and now the KED for pelvic fractures. I agree about practicality, dont really know what kind of pain may be involved to the patient. I do know pelvics are extremely painful as it in.

Having been in the KED in training quite often, I can only say, that it`s not really comfortable. Especially in the pelvis/groin region.

Overview

Rapid extrication without a KED

During rapid extrication, the patient is not immobilized by a KED, but rather taken directly out of the car onto a back board. Reasons for using this technique include:
• The scene is unsafe
• The patient's condition is unstable
• The patient is blocking access to another victim.

Description

Typically there are two head straps, three torso straps, and two legs straps which are used to adequately secure the KED to the victim. Unlike a long spine board or litter, the KED uses a series of wooden or polymer bars in a nylon jacket, allowing the responders to immobilize the neck and upper spine and remove the victim from the vehicle or other confined space. Although a KED can also be used to immobilize infants and children, it is preferable to use specifically designed pediatric im…
