What are Stencils and Why Use Them?
Stencils are essentially designs (shapes, patterns, words, phrases, etc) cut into a plastic material that is then overlaid onto paintable/stainable surfaces such as wood, walls, etc. Paint or stain is then applied over the stencil; and when the stencil is pulled away, the relief of the design (the cut-out part) is revealed on the surface. In the picture below, my hands are holding a small stencil of an abstract design. When placed on the wood, painted over and then removed, the blue design (shown to the right) is revealed….
Can you fix stencils?
It’s pretty difficult to “ fix” stenciled designs; once the paint is on, you’re mostly stuck with it, which is the main reason stenciling can be a bit stressful! Although you may be able to remove small amounts of paint with paint thinner or even chipping it off once it’s dry, the only way to fix big mistakes or really bad bleeding is to sand off the design and start over. This is why it’s REALLY important to use as little paint as possible when stenciling!
Is stencil vinyl thicker than crafting vinyl?
As I mentioned before, Stencil Vinyl is stronger and thicker than your typical crafting vinyl. As such, it tends to pull up really, really nicely from the paper backing without warping or ripping. I have found that really simple patterns and designs (no curvy edges, no teeny, tiny details, etc) can be pulled right up without any weeding. In the example below, I was able to pull off my grid stencil, perfectly, without any weeding!
Can you use craft brayer to secure stencil vinyl?
Although the adhesive on the back of the Stencil Vinyl is pretty tacky, I do recommend taking the time to reeeeaaally secure it to your surface to minimize any paint or stain seeping below the edges of your design. My trusty craft brayer worked perfectly for this, but you can also use your fingers. Just do your best to make sure the Stencil Vinyl is laying flat and there are no puckers or bubbles.

Can you cut stencils with a Cricut?
Stencil Vinyl – you can certainly cut stencils from “traditional” plastic sheets designed for stenciling, but Cricut’s Stencil Vinyl is not only sturdy and easy to work with, but its adhesive backing prevents a lot of the mess and paint bleeding associated with stencils.
Can you remove a stencil without removing the negative?
In fact, I was able to remove the entire stencil without disrupting the negative (unwanted) parts of the image at all! This is not only a huge time-saver, but it also means you can save/use the negative parts of the design as well, but you’ll need to use transfer paper (more on that below!)
Do script fonts have letters?
You’ll notice in design space all of the script fonts have separated letters. It looks kinda funny, so we want to move them together.
Do you need to be welded before making a stencil?
Before you make a stencil, your file will need to be all one cut. Some files you upload may need to be welded or attached together before you can make a stencil. Check the layers bar on the right side, If you see letters and shapes listed individually you will need to do some welding and attaching.
Can you see all the letters on a Cricut?
Now you can see all of the script letters are touching. But notice the layer panel on the right? Each letter is still showing individually. Cricut will cut each letter individually and we don’t want that.

Can you use stencils with vinyl?
Now, stencils made with vinyl would be one-time use only and you would need to throw them away.
Does the color of a stencil matter?
The color doesn’t matter since you will be stenciling and then throwing the stencil away.
Can you use freezer paper on a Cricut?
Freezer paper also makes a great stencil option if you’re working with fabric. All you have to do is cut it on your Cricut machine and apply it with an iron. It will stick to your fabric temporarily and peel off once your project is complete.
Can you cut a stencil from copy paper?
You may want to cut a test stencil from copy paper to make sure you have your stencil correctly designed before cutting from the film. That way, you get the mistakes taken care of on paper instead of the much more expensive stencil film!

How to make a font stand out?
In order to make the font stand out, make sure that you choose an acrylic paint that makes your font stand out. This is where the extra wood scraps will come in handy, especially if you are like me and like all different colors of paint and want to try out other elements.
What type of vinyl do you use for scraps?
But keep in mind that if this is an experiment or a first pass, use whatever type of vinyl you have on hand such as adhesive vinyl or Heat transfer vinyl. This is a great way to use your scrap pieces.

Q: Can I use vinyl instead?
You can use vinyl if you’d like. If you do, be sure to use permanent vinyl, not removable vinyl. Just remember that with vinyl stencils, they only last you for one use. This is why craft plastic is the best thing!
Q: How do I care for my stencils?
If you don’t plan to reuse it right away, you can gently wash your Reusable Stencil with soap and water to get more life out of it. After washing, gently pat it dry with a paper towel and allow it time to fully air dry. Be careful if using a regular towel, they sometimes get caught on the small cut edges of a design.
