The narrator, Montresor selects the festival time to carry out his plans for revenge on Fortunato. The carnival gives Montresor the opportunity to appear in disguise and coax his inebriated companion, Fortunato into the catacombs and ultimately to his death.
How did Montresor take revenge on Fortunato?
Poe starts out with a man, by the name of Montresor, wanting revenge on another man, named Fortunato. Most of the story takes place deep in the Montresor family catacombs. As Montresor lures Fortunato into the catacombs, he chains Fortunato up to a small hole in a wall, bricks it over, and leaves Fortunato to die.
What makes Montresor revenge?
The plot of the story is a simple one. Montresor tales revenge on his friend Fortunato by luring him into the tunnels under the family estate.

Revenge can be one of the strongest forms of motivation for a person to do evil things for a personal satisfaction.
