What to do if your string of lights has a dark chunk?
If your string of lights has a "dark chunk", pull out -ALL- of its bulbs and put them in the Untested bowl. We don't know whether they are dead or alive, but we are about to find out.
What is the last step in a dark chunk?
The last step is to refill all of the sockets in the "dark chunk". Nothing will happen until you fill ALL of the sockets in that chunk. When you do, you should be greeted with many happy little lamps all coming on at once. Hurray!
What is a shunt in a house light?
Unlike regular house lights, there's a little extra gizmo inside each of these bulbs. It's called a "shunt". It's sort of the inverse of a fuse. When the bulb is new, all of the electricity goes through the main filament, emitting that nice warm light. The shunt does not pass any electricity. When the main filament burns out, the shunt is supposed to take over, allowing electricity continue to flow through the bulb. (The shunt does not get hot enough to glow.) When the shunt works properly, every other bulb in that Chunk should stay ON.
Can you replace bulbs in a string of lights?
In addition to the string of lights, you will probably need some replacement bulbs. We don't entirely know how many yet. Maybe you saved the extras that came in the box last year, maybe you will need to go buy some new ones. Alternatively, if you have several strings, you can scavenge the lights from one string and use them to fix several other strings. (That's what I do.) [Any scavenged lamps should go in the "Untested" bowl described later.]

Do people use icicle lights?
While most people have used icicle lights to decorate their homes already, there are some who still haven’t. For the benefit of those who don’t know what icicle lights are, we’ll explain what they are and when to use them.
Step 1
Before you examine an entire line of icicle lights, verify that the outlet you are using is supplying power. You can do this by removing the extension cord and plugging in something else that will verify that it is receiving electricity. If the outlet appears to be working fine, move to the next step in troubleshooting.
Step 2
Locate the icicle light strand that is farthest out from the outlet. Unplug it to see if the rest of the strands then light up. Often, a bad strand will cause the rest in the line to go out. Removing the bad strand should cause the rest of the strands to the outlet to light.
Step 3
Check the strand in your hands for bad bulbs if the rest do light up. Gently press each bulb into the socket; even if it looks connected, the filaments from a bulb may not be connecting with the components in the socket. Plug in the strand and see if it, too, lights up. If so, the problem is solved. If not, continue to the next step.
Step 4
Move to the next closest strand if the whole line remains dark, then disconnect it. Observe if the rest of the strands light up back to the outlet. If so, check the bulbs on the second closest strand. Reconnect and observe if the rest of the strands light up. If so, you found the problem. If not, move to the next step.
Step 5
Repeat the process with every strand back to the outlet--disconnecting, testing bulbs and reconnecting. This way, you will be able to identify the problem strand and either fix it by adjusting the bulbs or replacing the strand with a working one.
Step 6
If you get to the extension cord connection and the line is still dark, try replacing the extension cord.
