Yes, it's worth a visit. Summer in Joshua Tree N.P. is rather impressive. There may not be any rangers at the entrances. You may not see any other people in the park for hours. At the Jumbo Rocks campground there are lots of low rocks that a 5-year girl can run all over pretty safely. But that's mostly true anywhere in the high desert part of the park...which is where you are if you come in through the west entrance (in the Town of Joshua Tree) or the 29 Palms entrance.
