Joe Webb Sr. was born in Beeville on Aug. 18, 1935, and grew up in that Coastal Bend town, where he got his first job shining shoes at 5 years old and earned a quarter for a day’s work, his son said. In the 1950s, he and his first wife, the late Frances Dee Toliver Webb, moved to San Antonio. They were high school sweethearts.
