It is a well-built transmission and remains easy to locate and generally inexpensive to buy and maintain. The strength, relatively short size and the gearing of the transmission make it a good choice for a variety of situations. The NP435 was made by New Process Gear from 1962 thru 1997.

What kind of transmission is The NP435 4 speed?

The NP435 4 Speed is a five speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The NP435 4 Speed is a top loaded with tower shifter and granny low 1st gear.

What is the tooth count and gear ratio of a NP435?

The tooth count and gear ratio are the same. The NP435 is a top loaded, top shifting truck style transmission. The NP435 enjoys a very low compound gear at 6.68:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. Note that some Dodge versions of this transmission offered a taller first gear of 4.56-to-1.

Is there a problem with The NP435?

The only problem with the NP435 is it's still just a 4 speed. An NV4500 or NV5600 would have a higher low gear but would also have overdrive. I agree with Beat95YJ on the NP435 shifting smoother, at least my Dodge NP435 does.

What is the compound gear on a Dodge NP435?

The NP435 enjoys a very low compound gear at 6.68:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. Note that some Dodge versions of this transmission offered a taller first gear of 4.56-to-1. The NP435 features a power-take-off (PTO) port on the passenger side of the case.

How to tell if a NP435 is a NP435?

You can recognize the NP435 by it’s single piece, aluminum, bolt-on top cover with the shifter sticking directly out of the top and a fitting on the driver’s side for the back up light switch. Most have the letters “NP” inside a circle cast into the cover.

What is the NP435?

The NP435 requires an adapter between the transmission and transfer case. There are two styles available; both assume you have a small block V8. One style adapter replaces the 8 cylinder intermediate housing.

How much does a NP435 weigh?

The NP435 also has the PTO cover plate on the passenger’s side. Weight is approximately 120 lbs.

Does a Bronco need a body lift?

The existing Bronco clutch is also used. Modifications needed: A body lift is not a requirement, but does make for an easier install. Because the transmission is so tall the shifter tower will come up through the floor. A fairly large hole needs to be cut, including the cross member (or body stiffener) under the floor.

Is the NP435 a good rock crawler?

The NP435 is extremely strong and durable making it a favorite of rock crawlers. The gearing basically makes it very much like a stock 3 speed with an extra low gear added. So if you’re comfortable with the 3 speed gear spread on the street, you’ll be fine with the NP435 as well.

What is a NP435 transmission?

Verne Simons Author. Apr 29, 2020. The NP 435 transmission is one of the most popular heavy-duty "Granny-Geared" four speeds that was ever offered from the factory. It came in several -, -, and 1-ton 4x4 trucks from Ford and Dodge, ranging from the early 1960s into the early 1990s. The NP435 is the only granny geared 4-speed with an aluminum top ...

What is the ratio of a Ford NP435?

The ratios for the Ford NP435s are: 6.68:1 First; 3.34:1 Second; 1.74:1 (or 1.66:1) Third; and 1:1 Fourth with a 8.26:1 reverse. There is a Dodge version with a taller 4.56:1 first that is much less desirable for off-road use.

Finding the correct bellhousing

Basically what we are doing here is making the front of our NP435 look as much like the front of an SM420 as possible—with the exception of the input shaft, which will have the 1-1/16-inch 10-spline machining. This means you'll need a GM clutch disk with a Ford center and a 10.5-inch outside diameter.

Buick V-6 Bellhousing

Some Jeeps came with Buick V-6s but many of those lived in front of T-14 transmissions that use an input shaft that is much longer than the NP435/or T-18. For that we need to find a bellhousing from a later Buick Car that had a manual transmission like a 1976-1978 Buick Century or Skyhawk, Buick Special, Apollo and so on.

AMC 2.5 with S-10

Similarly to the Buick V-6 swappers, anyone who wants to retain their AMC 2.5L 4-cylinder can make the SM420 work as well as the N435 work. To do this you need to find a bellhousing from a Chevy S-10 or Camaro that had the GM 60-degree V-6 and a manual transmission. Find more details on making the SM420/AMC 2.5 combo work.

GM small-block V-8

The vast majority of info needed to bolt the Ford NP435 to the back of a GM small-block is the same as when using a Buick bellhousing (subhead, above).

Transmission "Bonus Ears" and DIY conversion tabs

Some NP435s have "bonus ears" cast into the front face of the transmission. These are undrilled mounting ears that will help you mount one of the above bell housings to the transmission's front face. First, with a bare transmission housing, we fitted the custom Novak bearing retainer. Then we slid the bellhousing we have onto the transmission.

Aftermarket Bellhousings

There are also plenty of aftermarket bellhousings that can be used to make several transmissions work behind all kinds of engines. We are running a Ford T-18 behind an even-fire Buick V-6 using an adapter bell from Advance Adapters (712583).

What rail is the NP435?

The NP435 lacks the horizontal pin in the 1-2 rail, thus while in neutral the shifter tail could be in either the 1-2 or the 3-4 rail, or between them thus engaged in both at the same time, all depending on where you let go of the shifter.

What oil do you use on a 435?

What oil do you have in the 435? A regular gl4 or 5 gear oil can damage the soft parts in that trans. The proper oil is a sae 90 gl1 oil or sae50 motor oil ,

How many rpm does a 6.9L diesel have?

Here is a thread about over revving a 6.9L diesel. The concensus was that fuel economy did suffer above the diesel's 1,800 rpm sweet spot but the engine still returned a long service life.

Is 2350 RPM bad?

2350 RPM at 65 MPH isn't bad. Not ideal, but livable. My experience with that is a 2.73:1 camaro, but same cruise RPM with the Camaro being 26" tires. That was a 350 V8, and could do 18 MPG at low highway speeds. I did try 3.08:1 gears in that exact car, and that raises the cruise RPM to 2600, which was annoying until I swapped mufflers. MPG dropped, even after correcting for speedometer error, by 2 MPG average, but to be fair I was doing more blasts up the on-ramps.

When was the 445 used?

Dave; the 445 was used from 1977 to 1980 at least, and likely other years. They were used in pick-ups and ramchargers, and probably others. They came in 2wd and 4wd versions. The listings for clutches show different part numbers for clutch diameters and/or engine sizes, but nothing related to transmissions.

What is 4th gear?

Good for trailer towing. 4th gear is also 1-1. First gear is usually not used in normal driving. Check for interchange problems [clutch splines, bell housing, clutch bearing dia., tailshaft length, etc.] There is also was 4 speed overdrive trans available, but you would need 4.11's or higher in a truck.

Does the Chilton 445 cover 445 transmissions?

It covers New Process 420, 433, 435, 540, and 541 transmissions. It doesn't cover a 445. The Chilton book says the four-speed boxes, other than the 420, are the same as the five-speed boxes except they have a spacer where second gear and the second speed synchronizer inner ring sit on the five-speed boxes. Transfer Case Adaptability

  • This transmission makes an excellent conversion transmission due to its adaptability into most Jeeps. Both 2wd and 4wd versions of the NP435 can be used equally well, and there are no inherent advantages to either one once you have installed our adapter assembly. The Ford and Dodge 435 can be adapted to the popular Jeep (and many IH) transfer cases, including the: 1. D…

Engine Compatibility and Adaptability

  • Dodge & Ford
As the reader will conclude, the Dodge NP435 will marry directly to a Dodge style bellhousing. Likewise for the Ford NP435 and its bellhousing compatibilities.
  • AMC Jeep
The Ford NP435 is also an excellent candidate for AMC Jeep bellhousings made from 1976 to 1986 that were married to the T150, T18 and T176 transmissions, or otherwise have an available bellhousing bolt pattern of 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall. They are readily compatible with these eng…

3 hours ago  · I was running a NP435 / 205 in mine with 3.50 gearing in the axles & 33's. It was great around town and off road. Later, I put a set of axles with 4.10 gears in and it was good around town but I was in the neighborhood of 4k going down the road at 65. I think it would have been better with 35's. Depends on what gears you are running I guess.

10 hours ago  · OregonPSD, the T19 detents are fine, by sliding in and out of gear I mean the shifter moves nice and smooth, like a newer 5-speed transmission. As opposed to having to put some effort to get her out of one gear and into the other, as is the case with the NP435. The T19 is in excellent shape overall, very pleasant to drive.

9 hours ago  · I'd have to agree, it seems the NP435 is much more common. I'm not sure where cooltoolguys was manufactured but, FLATBEDFORDs F350, my F350, and the other '67 F350 we bought together, all where made in the Mahwah plant, and FLATBEDFORDs is the only one with the T18. Go figure. That's a pretty good question that I'd like to know the answer to also.
