Predictive analytics is on track to be a more than $9 billion industry by 2020. It works by using historical information and transactional data to predict health-related occurrences, such as how the weather might affect patients with respiratory ailments.

Why is precision medicine important?

However, precision medicine offers an opportunity to more accurately predict if a patient will respond to a particular drug therapy, helping to lower healthcare costs associated with wasted prescriptions and ineffective patient treatment, as well as to prevent unnecessary side effects and drug interactions .

What is value based care?

Instead of following a traditional fee-for-service model, value-based care rewards providers by determining the cost of the service as it relates to the quality of care, patient outcomes, and other factors. Forbes predicts that up to 15% of global healthcare spending will be on value-based care by the end of 2019. As technology improves, allowing medical professionals to better track quality of care, bundle packages, and transition to Electronic Health Records (EHRs), value-based care will become a more viable option.

What is the future of healthcare?

It’s a fact that everything changes. When it comes to the future of healthcare, experts believe a lot will be changing over the next few years. The industry of healthcare is impacted by so much, including politics, technology, people, and more.

Why is the delivery of healthcare changing?

However, the delivery of healthcare is also changing because of technology.

What is predictive medicine?

One of the biggest changes in healthcare is predictive medicine. Smart machines and devices can share healthcare data with professionals to predict problems before they even arise or become life threatening. How to optimize healthcare?

This means that doctors in varying levels and specialties come together to help manage a patient and address all their needs from different perspectives. The teamwork approach places the patient in the middle and relies on each professional to contribute knowledge to optimize care.

How will AI help healthcare?

This is when robots can use data to learn and respond to different situations without human interaction. In the medical field, real-time diagnosis and even prescriptions have been handled by AI. From a tangible sense, robots will also be used to aid healthcare professionals with physical tasks, like pulling supplies from stock rooms or the kitchen in a hospital, for example.

Why is the incorporation of technological healthcare trends important?

Generally, the incorporation of technological healthcare trends lets medical providers significantly improve the accuracy of treatments and their overall productivity.

What is digital transformation in healthcare?

Digital transformation is the key idea behind all the healthcare IT trends appearing today. In the hospitals that have already adopted a digital-friendly culture, senior managers recognize the effectiveness of investing in technologies and decide to teach medical staff the requisite skills to use them to the maximum.

Why is blockchain important in healthcare?

In this context, as one of the top trends in healthcare, blockchain contributes to the security of data linkages and the overall privacy of electronic information. In particular, the technology provides the needed protection for patient data for effective and safe data-sharing within healthcare organizations.

What is telehealth technology?

In essence, Telehealth technologies unite numerous software platforms that support voice calls, video conferencing, secure messaging, and comprehensive notification systems. Via online portals, users can establish constant communication with the needed amount of interactions with healthcare practitioners.

What is AI in healthcare?

Together with Robotic Process Automation (RPA), AI establishes the foundation for smart healthcare culture that solves numerous current pain points. The typical areas of AI applications include activities coordination, workflow optimization, doctors’ time management, and paperless documentation.

How does technology benefit healthcare practitioners?

Healthcare practitioners can benefit from this technology with reduced response time, an ability to handle an unlimited number of users and provide accurate medical advice, and an easier scheduling process with automatic reminders and useful templates.

How does blockchain affect healthcare?

Also, blockchain affects the cost of healthcare, successfully handling an overwhelming amount of duplicated data that causes additional storage expenses. In this regard, smart contracts help to eliminate inconsistency with hospital rules and governmental regulations. Being self-executable, they automate the process without the need for management and control.

How will the process and outcomes of healthcare improve?

With improved availability of data to the public, process and outcomes will improve. Those not capable of achieving the best outcomes will likely either improve or stop doing the procedure. In the next 10 years, process and outcomes will be optimized for a significant proportion of patients with relatively common diseases. With these patients, care will become more regularized, making it possible to develop a better understanding of the best care delivery model. For example, it will be possible to measure the outcomes of nurse practitioners, generalist physicians, and specialty physicians in the management of certain diseases and determine the best utilization of each, creating better “hand-offs.”

Why are patients the ultimate consumers?

As patients surf the web and as employers perhaps no longer choose the health plan for their employees (rather giving them a “defined contribution” to buy their own healthcare), patients will become the ultimate consumers. Measures of patient satisfaction and other patient-oriented report cards will assume increasing importance. An increasing consumer focus could reduce the need for wide geographic coverage of health plans that sell to employers: with the individual choosing the insurance product, patients will choose their own physicians and hospitals close to their own homes.

Why are AHCs important?

These programs have a relatively short shelf life since other hospitals may be able to apply similar protocols to similar patients. The AHC must, therefore, be an engine of innovation and continuously regenerate the next new knowledge in current quaternary programs and birth new quaternary programs as well. It will be important for AHCs to demonstrate innovation to patients and physicians by developing new ways to describe new techniques and treatment. Continued innovation can also be fostered by appropriate partnerships with industry. If an AHC is the first to have a new drug or device available to treat patients, this benefits the patients and the AHC. With even a few of these relationships and breakthroughs, the halo effect that “this is the place to be” for advances in care for sick patients will be an important differentiator for the AHC and ultimately a good negotiating tool in determination of pricing with health plans. While quaternary programs can demonstrate that the AHC is “different,” these hospitals and doctors cannot survive by quaternary programs alone.

How can AHCs be better?

AHCs can also be “better” by improving both the effectiveness and efficiency of patient care. AHCs should develop centers for health services research that integrate with quality improvement programs and clinical research to create not only protocols for efficient patient care and demonstrating outcomes, but also integration of new drugs and devices into these protocols. The AHC's electronic medical record can facilitate the identification, enrollment, and analysis of large numbers of patients into cutting edge research protocols.

What is the threat to AHCs?

Perhaps the most important threat to AHCs has been the decrease in the perceived value of the patient care delivered by their doctors and hospitals: the payment differential to AHCs in comparison to community physicians and hospitals has virtually disappeared. The most immediate impact over the past 5 years has been a 30% reduction in direct payments for physicians in many AHCs (1).

How does the Internet improve patient care?

As the technology improves, the information deriving from patient care will also improve. With the Internet and its successors (which among other features will provide the important safeguards for confidentiality), the electronic medical record will not only be able to store patient information but also to provide information on “best practice” instantaneously, whether it is derived statistically from the practice of the physicians in that AHC, or based on health plan data or nationally generated practice guidelines. The opportunities for “online clinical research” are clear. The ability to question large numbers of patients and large segments of the general population may provide overall improved definitions of “quality” from the patient perspective.

How will genetics improve health care?

As genetic diagnosis and treatment translate from cell to bedside, the information and armamentarium available to the clinician will increase perhaps inconceivably over the next 10 years. Markedly improved less invasive imaging (e.g., computer assisted diagnosis of coronary artery disease combining echo, magnetic resonance, and positron emission tomography) along with less invasive treatment using catheter techniques will provide better functional outcomes with earlier resumption of activity. DNA chip technology or genetic fingerprinting will vastly improve risk assessment. Knowledge of the risks will increase the ability of other technology to extend life. Yet techniques such as these will require that we face and attempt to resolve a series of new ethical questions.

When will Amazon Care be available for employees?

When Amazon rolled out a telehealth service called Amazon Care for its Seattle-based employees in February 2020, there was speculation that it may also be preparing for a public debut.
