What's the difference between Fosamax and Boniva?
Boniva and Fosamax are second-generation bisphosphonates, but they are not exactly the same. Their biggest difference is in how they are dosed. Boniva can be given once monthly, while Fosamax can be given once daily or once weekly.
What drug classification is ibandronate?
Ibandronate is in a class of medications called bisphosphonates. It works by preventing bone breakdown and increasing bone density (thickness).

There are concerns about the long-term safety of bisphosphonates (such as Boniva) as long-term use has been associated with atypical femur fractures, osteonecrosis of the jaw, and esophageal cancer.
Does Boniva cause bone loss?
Specifically, Boniva may cause a rare but serious problem called osteonecrosis. With osteonecrosis, there isn't enough blood flowing to your bones. This causes damage to your bones, including in your jaws and teeth. Problems with your jaws and teeth may occur at any time while you're taking Boniva.
