History

The year was 1943. On a snowy and freezing winter night, a simple chef named Joe Sheridan was working at Foynes Port in Limerick County, Ireland. While he was serving drinks to the customers, he didn’t know that one of the most glorious drinks of the 20th century was waiting for him.

Variations

As you can guess, it was inevitable that some variations of this tasty drink will have been created at some point. Why, you might ask? The answer is we can’t get enough of this drink and every variation offers us a new and unique approach to Irish coffee.

Instructions

First thing you need to do is heating the Irish coffee mug until it’s warm. You can pour hot water into the mug and once the mug is warmed, pour the water out.

Origin

Different variations of coffee cocktails pre-date the now-classic Irish coffee by at least 100 years.

Preparation

Irish whiskey and at least one level teaspoon of sugar are poured over black coffee and stirred in until fully dissolved. Thick cream is carefully poured over the back of a spoon initially held just above the surface of the coffee and gradually raised a little until the entire layer is floated.

Variations

In 1988, the National Standards Authority of Ireland published Irish Standard I.S. 417: Irish Coffee. The standard has been cancelled at least as of 2020.
