About

Floral foam was developed in the early 1950s by a company named Oasis, which is the leading supplier of the product today. The foam, whether wet or dry, holds flower stems in the precise positioning the designer envisioned without the instability a flower frog often causes.

Density

Wet flower foam is not as compact or dense as dry foam, because the wet foam must have open space for water. Dry flower foam is very dense and heavier than wet foam; there no need for dry foam to have room for water, and dry foam needs more weight to stay in place when the arrangement is completed.

Grade

Flower foam, wet or dry, is sold in different grades, which distinguishes the density. The most common grade used is termed "standard" or "ideal." A lighter-grade flower foam is used for fine-stemmed flowers that might break if inserted into standard-grade foam.

Absorption

If you mistakenly used dry flower foam for a fresh-cut flower arrangement, you would discover your mistake quickly. Because of the formulation and density of dry floral foam, it will not absorb or take up fluid readily, if at all, when placed in water. Wet flower foam, on the other hand, quickly absorbs water like a sponge.

Origins of Floral Foam

In 1954 a gentleman named V.L. Smithers pioneered the water-absorbing foam for florists and changed the floral industry. His company Oasis® Floral Products remains the leading global manufacturer and supplier of floral foam today.

Using Wet Floral Foam for Fresh Floral Arrangements

Wet floral foam is designed to hold water for lengthy periods of time which makes it the ideal floral foam choice when working with fresh flowers. Start with either a pre-made shape or one you’ve cut yourself.

Using Dry Floral Styrofoam for Silk Floral Arrangements

Dry floral foam bricks (also known as floral styrofoam) are easy to cut and work with in the same way as wet floral foam except you do not need to soak them in water. They are mainly used for plastic plants, fake plants and artificial flower arrangements.

History

Various desserts consisting of whipped cream in pyramidal shapes with coffee, liqueurs, chocolate, fruits, and so on either in the mixture or poured on top were called crème en mousse 'cream in a foam', crème mousseuse 'foamy cream', mousse 'foam', and so on, as early as 1768. Modern mousses are a continuation of this tradition.

Savoury mousse

Fish mousse with brown bread and butter was a popular meal of American cuisine, and is still sometimes made as a party dip, although it's not as common as it was in the 1950s.
