Parking sensors
Parking sensors are proximity sensors for road vehicles designed to alert the driver to obstacles while parking. These systems, which use either electromagnetic or ultrasonic sensors, are marketed variously by vehicle manufacturers under proprietary brand names such as Park Dist…
What is Park Distance Control?
Park Distance Control supports the driver during parking and maneuvering. It uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor surroundings and alert the driver of any obstacles in their path.
What is a 4 channel ultrasonic parking system?
Because four ultrasonic sensors are installed in the rear bumper, this is referred to as a 4-channel system. The parking aid is activated as soon as the reverse gear is engaged. The ultrasonic sensors mounted in the bumper emit a package of ultrasonic pulses in combined transmit and receive mode.
How does the acoustic distance warning system work?
The control unit can thus evaluate the signals from several sensors and consequently calculate the minimum distance. The acoustic distance warning system kicks in at a distance of 160cm. The frequency of the sound signal, i.e. the beeping, changes with decreasing distance to the obstacle. If the distance is less than 20cm, a continuous tone sounds.
How does the parking assistant work?
The parking assistant is a driver assistance system that supports drivers during manoeuvring and parking and warns them of obstacles in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The traditional parking aid operates on the basis of ultrasound that is emitted using several sensors.

What is PDC in parking?
What park distance control (PDC) really means: Basics. The parking assistant is a driver assistance system that supports drivers during manoeuvring and parking and warns them of obstacles in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The traditional parking aid operates on the basis of ultrasound that is emitted using several sensors.
What is a PDC control unit?
The PDC control unit controls each individual ultrasonic sensor and the sound signalling device.#N#The control unit determines the distance to the obstacle from data provided by the digital input signals.
What is a PDC on a Golf V Plus?
The manufacturer's designation for the purely acoustic parking aid is park distance control (PDC). Because four ultrasonic sensors are installed in the rear bumper, this is referred to as a 4-channel system.
Who bears sole responsibility for parking and for all other manoeuvres?
Drivers bear sole responsibility for parking and for all other manoeuvres! The electronic parking aid is a driver assistance system, but it cannot replace the due care and attention provided by a human driver.
Does a trailer have a PDC?
On vehicles with factory-fitted trailer coupling, the PDC system is not activated when a trailer is being towed. In some cases, smaller objects, bushes, poles or posts may not be recognised and consequently not picked up by the system, which means that without human intervention damage could be caused to the vehicle.
Can parking aid sensors be painted?
Painting of the parking aid sensor. In the majority of cases, the visible surfaces of the ultrasonic sensors have been painted in the vehicle's colour. In such cases, the manufacturer stipulates vehicle-specific paintwork guidelines in order to avoid any impaired functioning.
Theory
PDC parking sensors and submarine’s radar works on the same principle, sonar distance measurement technology. The sensors emit ultrasonic sound waves which return to the sensor and measure the distance between vehicle and object. This system can detect anything living or non-living in between the space and vehicles.
Components
The basic components of PDC systems are similar in all the vehicles. However, there can be slight changes in these elements as per technological advancements. The core component of this system is the PDC control unit.
Design and Working
Usually, the PDC parking sensors are installed at the rear end of the vehicle known as a 4-channel system. The sensors are activated automatically when the reverse gear is engaged. In a few modern vehicles, sensors are activated when parking assist is engaged by a push-button. These sensors emit and receive numbers of ultrasonic waves at a time.
Automatic Deactivation
Park distance control system is an intelligent system that works autonomously on the basis of data collected from surroundings. This automatic system can disengage itself autonomously for avoiding collisions or accidents. We have listed some of the reasons that disengaged the PDC automatically.
Faulty Park Distance System
The autonomous PDC system can malfunction due to external or internal faults. The following reasons can cause a faulty park distance control system.
