It is a challenge for LEGO builders to hide as many moulding marks as possible. Some of us are pedantic about such things, when we are taking our time to build the model. The marks can be hidden wherever a piece has rotational symmetry (order 2 for 2x4, order 4 for 2x2). Among the building criteria, a speed-build might see the moulding-mark-hiding criterion reduced in priority, or the competition might include bonus points for hiding the marks.
