Using hand-collected data on analyst locations, we study how geographic proximity affects analyst coverage decisions for U.S. firms that went public during 1996–2009, along with the impact of local coverage on firm visibility.
1. Introduction
Abundant evidence in prior research reveals that analyst coverage affects price informativeness, earnings management, financing activities, firm value, and cost of capital.
3. Data
In this section we describe our data sources, sample selection criteria, and computation details of key variables. We also show summary descriptive statistics for the samples we use in our analyses. Table 1 summarizes our variables and data sources.
5. The impact of local coverage for low visibility firms
We have documented that geographic proximity facilitates analysts׳ coverage of IPO firms. We next turn to whether local analyst coverage has real effects for the firms. As we discussed in our introduction, prior research documents benefits to firms of gaining analyst coverage in general.
6. Additional tests
In the above sections we show that geographic proximity increases analysts׳ coverage likelihood and accelerates their coverage initiation once they choose to cover. These main results are robust to various changes in the samples, regression models, and alternative proxies for analyst geographic proximity.
7. Conclusion
Despite abundant evidence regarding the impact of analyst coverage on covered firms and on analysts׳ employers, we have an incomplete understanding of factors that motivate an individual analyst to cover a particular firm.
