The Flying V was first made by Gibson in 1958, the same year as the Explorer was made.

The Flying-V is a proposed flying wing airliner being studied by researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The aircraft is designed to be highly energy-efficient over long distances.

When was the Flying V made?

The Flying-V was conceived by Justus Benad in 2014 during his thesis project at Airbus Hamburg. KLM has backed this plane. In July 2020, the scaled flight model of the Flying-V made its first test flights.

How tall is the Flying V?

The proposed dimensions of the Flying-V are: 55 meters in length. 65 meter wingspan. 17 meters tall.

Origins

Gibson president Ted McCarty pushed for a line of modernist guitars in the mid-1950s to compete with the newly designed, and highly successful, Fender Stratocaster. They manufactured prototypes of the guitars in 1957, including a mahogany version that was abandoned because it was extremely heavy.

V Bass

In 1981, Gibson produced a four-string bass version of the Flying V. Only 375 were produced, most of them black but a few in alpine white, silverburst, or transparent blue. Epiphone also made V-shaped basses. In late 2011, Gibson re-released the Flying V bass under the Gibson name; it was discontinued again in late 2012.
