What were the special effects in Captain Gregg?
The special effects in those days were crude and awesome . When Captain Gregg came and went, we “froze.” If you’ve ever played a game of freeze tag with a kid, you know kids are good at freezing. So the director would call “freeze” and Edward would walk into the scene or leave the scene and they would keep the camera rolling until they called “cut” and then they fixed it all up in editing. That was like a game and it was fun to play. In terms of objects floating around, yes, there were strings and wires everywhere, all the time! The property and special effects department must have gone mad with all they had to do. Even the sound of thunder in those days (it rained a lot at Gull Cottage, you know) – was made by two grips wobbling and popping a huge piece of sheet metal. Rain came from a garden hose. Rooms had three walls and no ceiling. Cobwebs were made of something that smelled like rubber cement being shot out of something that looked like a squirt gun! It was magical, it was awesome, and made not less so by the fact that we were busy pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes in television land… because (shhh) the ghost wasn’t real! Er, that’s what we thought, I think!

What color are Cairn Terriers?
Probably a Wheaten colored Cairn. They are a golden brown, with red and blond streaks, much like highlights. My own sweet Dougal, of blessed memory, was a Wheaten Cairn. He looks very much like the dog in the movie. They truly are wonderful dogs, and my second favorite breed after Westies. West Highland White Terriers are kind of cousins to Cairn Terriers as they originally started from the same stock. Both breeds really seem to love water, and are excellent at hunting mice and rats, as that is what the breed was originally developed for.

Production
Although Joseph Mankiewicz had an excellent reputation as a screenwriter, Philip Dunne says Mankiewicz's only contribution to this script was writing a couple of "excellent lines" for George Sanders' character. Sanders' casting came about when Richard Ney, the original actor playing the role, was fired for being inadequate in the part. Bernard Herrmann, the composer of the film's music, regarded it as his finest score.
Reception
The New York Times called The Ghost and Mrs. Muir "a pleasurable film, despite its failings," singling out Edna Best for "by far the best performannce [sic]". In the writer's opinion, Harrison "has such an ingratiating personality that this compensates in large measure for the lack of characterization in his role," but Tierney "is a pretty girl, but has no depth of feeling as an actress."
Variety, on the other hand, praised the actors and the film unreservedly:
Awards
Charles Lang received a 1947 Academy Award nomination for his black-and-white cinematography on the movie.
The film is recognized by American Film Institute in these lists:
