PGW contractors will dig a trench and other holes along the street and/or sidewalks so that new plastic or coated steel pipes can be installed. Natural gas mains are typically located in the street, close to the curb. During this process, cars parked in the work zone must be relocated to an area where work is not being performed. "No Parking" signs will be posted prior to the start of work. If cars are not moved, our contractors will relocate vehicles to the nearest location outside of the work zone. At the end of each day, trenches and holes will be covered and all equipment will be stored out of the way. In general, daily work hours based on the City posted hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Convinced of the gas works’ growing profitability, in March 1841 the Philadelphia government took over ownership of PGW. After Philadelphia’s consolidation with the county in 1854, PGW acquired the local companies in the annexed territory, extending its reach fully into the 129.7 square miles that made up the new city.
Ownership Compromise
Trying to remedy the situation, in 1897 a broad movement among consumers and good-government groups in Philadelphia proposed selling the gas works to a private company. But political opposition to a sale resulted in a compromise.
Political Pressure to End Lease
United Gas Improvement leased Philadelphia Gas Works from 1897 until 1972. UGI completed this building at Broad and Arch in 1899. Today it houses offices. (The Library Company of Philadelphia)
