An acid is used to etch after polishing. Polishing doesn't have to be mirror fine, I use a 60 grit flap disc and it comes out fine!

Some toilet bowl cleaning acids also work -- "The Works" is hydrochloric acid (check the label to be sure), you can get a bottle for about a dollar at the dollar store.

We use the pickling paste that is used to passivate stainless welds, nasty stuff but works quickly.

We use the acid solution used for electro passivating - like a weaker nitric acid than pickling paste, or phosphoric acid. It needs a bit of heat from a gas torch to make it work effectively.

I use naval jelly and it works fine with mig welds but not with tig (at all). What will work on tig welds. I also tried Ferric Chloride on tig with no luck at all there
