The film and the novel it is based on were both inspired by the facts that emerged during the trial of Pamela Smart, a school media services coordinator who was imprisoned for seducing a 16-year-old student and convincing him to kill her husband.

Plot

She marries Larry Maretto, using his family restaurant business to keep herself financially stable, and takes a job as an assistant at WWEN, a local cable station, in hopes of climbing the network ladder.
Production
To Die For is a mixture of styles, combining a traditional drama with darkly comic direct-to-camera monologues by Kidman's character, and mockumentary interviews, some tragic, with certain of the other characters in the film.
Critical reception
The film was screened out of competition at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. To Die For was very well received by critics, with Nicole Kidman's performance being especially praised.

To Die For is one of those titles I used to see at the video store, glance at and then find something else to rent instead. Whoever decided to use this cover was pretty perceptive though, because I feel as though it actually conveys the cheese brought forth in the movie.

Not too bad, the pacing was hit or miss at spots but I dug the fx on this one. Bonus points for Duane Jones making an appearance.

I tend to write quickly, as I had with my first book, ‘Baby Love ,’ and my goal was to finish this one in two weeks. But I didn’t know what it was going to be.

Edwards: ‘To Die For’ was very heightened visually. For inspiration we’d watched Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Frenzy,’ which has a great shot where the camera is inside a London-flat hallway, descends a staircase, turns 180 degrees and then tracks backward out the front door and into the street.
