Check for a bad seal — While PVC pipes can burst if water freezes in the line over the winter, the most likely culprit of your hot tub’s leak is a bad seal. If you’ve examined the check valve (or valves) and determined it is not the cause of your leak, a corroded pump seal may be to blame.

Why is the water level in my spa higher than the pool?

If the spa's water level is higher than that of the pool, when the pump stops pushing water to the spa and pool, the spa will equalize itself to the level of the pool in a process known as equalization. No water is being lost.

Is my spa leaking if the pump is off?

In most cases, it is unlikely that the spa is leaking if it drains down when the pump is off. If the spa is leaking, there would also be a noticeable drop in the pool's water level. In normal operation (pool mode) of a pool/spa combination, the spa is usually set to overflow into the pool, making a spa leak difficult to detect.

Why won’t my hot tub hold water?

If this scenario sounds similar to your current situation, there is likely an issue with your plumbing, backflow check valve, or a stampede of elephants rolled into town and promptly guzzled up your hot tub water. Okay, that last scenario is completely unlikely, but we wanted to keep you on your toes.

Why does my spa drain into the pool?

Normally if a pool system is perfect, it's sealed so that the water won't drain out from the pump or anywhere else when it shuts off, but if there's an air leak, it loses that seal and everything floods back to the pool. That's another reason why your spa could drain out.

Why does my hot tub water level drop?

Hot tubs do lose water due to evaporation, but not more than 1 inch a week unless the cover is left open or it sees heavy use. A well-fitting cover can minimize water loss from evaporation. And generally the lower the water temperature, the slower the evaporation rate.

How does a spillover spa work?

Spillover spas are hot tubs that connect directly to your pool through a small curtain or fountain of water. This water moves directly from the jacuzzi into the swimming pool, spilling over a ledge or a series of ledges.

Why is spa draining in spa mode?

The suction valves need to be adjusted properly. Turn the spa suction valve to the “off” position and make sure you have the spa return valve at least partially open. This will help the flow between the pool and spa. You may also want to see if the actuator has gone bad if the suction valves are fine.

Re: In ground pool hot tub drains when pump is on????

Sounds like your valve actuator has died. If it's a Jandy actuator.....it should have a 3 position dip switch......on1.....off....on2. If the motor doesn't turn the valve when you switch the dip switch.....chances are the actuator is bad.

Re: In ground pool hot tub drains when pump is on????

Also....I'm guessing that your automatic system possibly was in spa mode.....sucking all the water from the spa and returning all the water to the spa.....then the system attempted to go into pool mode.......the return valve actuator turned.....but the suction actuator didn't......therefore putting all the spa water into the pool.

Re: In ground pool hot tub drains when pump is on????

I have had a similar problem with my actuators. Try removing the cover from the actuator itself, exposing the guts, first remove the valve handle. You will see four little wires attached to clips. Jiggle these wires, sometimes they become loose or get a bit of corosion causing them to lose connection.

Re: In ground pool hot tub drains when pump is on????

take a look at my previous reply. I really believe you are buying an actuator unnecessarily. Try my method first. I'm willing to be that is it. I had the same problem with my compool actuators.

Spa is draining into pool when turned on

I think I have a valve in the wrong position, can someone tell me why my spa is draining into the pool when I turn the spa on? HELP

Why are my jandy valves out of position?

They should be set so that there is more water going to the spa than the pool to get the waterfall effect into the pool the spas drains should only be cracked open to help keep it clean. These valves may have gotten out of sinc due to a power bump /someone moving them with the switch etc. Its probably just a valve setting if you haven't seen a water lose or you don't see air bubbles from returns when running, which would be a sign of an air leak on the equipment.

What Is Causing This, and Can It Be fixed?

  • This canbe fixed! The cause is what is known as a check valve. There may be either an existing check valve installed that needs replacing or no check valve at all. This valve uses a spring (or floater ball) inside it to allow the water to flow in only one direction. When the pump shuts off, water cannot flow back through the pool returns, which prevents the spa from equalizing and all…
