Can plastic pipes freeze and burst?
Mar 04, 2020 · Will poly pipe freeze and burst? Due to its flexibility, PEX has a small margin of expansion under the damaging pressure caused by ice formation. If the weather gets cold enough, PEX pipes can and will freeze like any plumbing. However, PEX may be less likely to rupture as a result of freezing. Click to see full answer.
What happens if water freezes in PVC pipe?
Apr 23, 2020 · PVC pipes are in danger of freezing when surrounding temperatures approach 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Water damage from a burst pipe is expensive. Why do pipes burst when there is ice on them?
A freeze event in a plastic water piping system is a complex phenomenon. PVC and CPVC pipe filled with water, sealed and placed in a freezing environment typically will not crack. The pipes will expand to absorb the net volumetric expansion of ice.

Why are galvanized pipes so rare?
Galvanized pipes are rarely used in our area anymore. That’s because they are prone to corrode on the interior walls and leak from the inside out. The thinning of the corroded walls also makes them a plumbing pipe most likely to freeze . Luckily they are quickly becoming extinct and replaced with one of the plastic pipes.
What is PEX used for?
PEX (crosslinked polyethylene) is the most widely used type in our area. It’s the builder’s choice. We all know that builders choose materials for two reasons. The first is because it is the cheapest to purchase and install and the second is because it is cheapest choice when they get fewer warranty callback calls.
Is copper a good conductor of heat?
Copper and other metal pipes and the water they transport are fairly decent conductors of heat. Because of that they can draw heat from warmer conditions within the heated home. This can be beneficial when installed closer to exterior freezing conditions because they can carry that heat toward the colder exterior.
Is PEX pipe flexible?
But besides its affordability PEX is also touted as being more flexible than the other plastic pipe choices, PVC and CPVC. Its flexibility makes it a good choice for retrofitting those old galva nized pipes. Another advantage to PEX is that it is almost always installed in a single continuous run from source to fixture.

Plastic pipe will not only be much less likely to freeze in the first place - due to being a much better insulator - but will also very probably survive freezing water without bursting.

Blowing out your system works, but is subject to unforeseen freezes. Automatic drains drain the pipe every time the line is depressurized. Not only do you completely mitigate your risk of freeze damage, but also you do it without having to think about it.

When I installed my system some 25 years ago, I installed auto-drains in the low spots. Winter came and I had no way of knowing if they worked or not, so I had the system blown out. Now, I buried my PVC pipe, which was the old thin wall crap, as deep as the Ditch Witch would go, about 2'.
