Copper is a supremely versatile metal that benefits various industries with effective conductivity and malleability.

Can nickel be used for copper plating?

Electroless nickel plating for copper requires some special treatment when compared to other metals. Since copper is non-catalytic in regards to this process, it needs a jump start of sorts. We can facilitate the process by applying an electrical current for a few seconds before beginning the soak.

Does chrome plating help copper?

Benefits of Chrome Plating for Copper. Copper naturally corrodes, forming a patina or a greenish oxide coating on the outside. Chrome layering can stave off these issues, as it drastically increases corrosion deterrence due to an even layer and natural resistance to many elements.

Our chrome plating and electroplating copper process is performed with a similar sequence to plating on steel. Soak clean, followed by an electro-clean, an acid pickle, and a nickel strike. After the strike is applied, virtually any type of plating can follow. For decorative exterior applications, the strike is followed by a layer of semi-bright nickel, high sulfur nickel, bright nickel, micro-porous nickel, and chromium.

Is copper a good conductor?

Copper has excellent electrical characteristics and thermal conductivity. It is also a relatively soft metal which is easily formed. Copper metal when corroded will form a patina or a green/blue oxide on the surface. While the patina looks pleasant, the oxide film is less conductive.

So my dad brought me some copper that's chrome plated. I'll post some pictures here soon but I'm wondering how to remove the chrome.

JHCC

Remember, even if you can’t use it yourself, you can probably turn it into cash at the scrapyard and use the proceeds to buy tools and materials.

I eventually want to make some knives so this will be some good accent metal for guards and what not. I just want to get the chrome off of it. There's probably like 10-15 pounds of it there.

Will W

Maybe you could use acid to remove it? You would want a relatively strong acid so it doesnt take a very long time to do it. Just a thought.

Pr3ssure

Yeah, that's one thing I was reading online. Like hydrochloric acid I think.

JHCC

The problem with removing the chrome with acid is, what do you do with the acid after? All you’ve done is move the chrome from the copper to the acid. It’s still toxic — how are you going to dispose of it safely?

Gosh I LOVE you Slag! We used a similar technique to get gold out of mercury back in the day. My question for the chrome removal process is this. Is there a way to precipitate the chrome out of solution?

Why does brass have verdigris?

Brass still develops verdigris also because of the copper content. Not sure whether this applies to all alloys of brass but I've done work on several vintage brass bridges which have corroded and seized up intonation screws, etc. You can always put a layer of lacquer or shellac onto brass/copper to give it a degree of protection from oxidisation.

Can you use brass instead of copper?

Not copper, but you could use brass instead.Brass is much more durable than copper and darkens somewhat over time.I have even seen it darken to look almost identical to copper, yet it doesn't turn green when you sweat on it.

Does copper verdigris seize?

I guess a concern would be corrosion. Copper verdigris will happily seize up smaller threads like fine tuners, set screws, etc. I doubt that tuner gearings are of a size where corrosion could be an issue though.

Can copper be used to jam gears?

Your concerns about copper jamming the gears is a valid, however unless the copper is structural as opposed to decorative plating it will just wear off over time and smush itself into the non-bearing areas of the gearing along with the lubricant.

Is it good to test chrome?

Testing is always a good option. It might be worth seeing how scuffing the chrome helps the process. I myself might try breaking down the chrome a little using PCB etchant like ferric chloride or - if you are especially fun - this:

Can AC waveforms reverse anode and cathode?

I reasoned that since an AC waveform reverses the anode and cathode each cycle, you could "pull the edges and corners" back off, leaving the deposited metal on surfaces thereby building up better plating overall. By biasing the AC waveform in favour of a larger or longer positive-going phase it would favour deposition (anode to cathode) with a shorter or weaker un-plating (wow I'm technical) phase.
