Light Fixtures and Hanging Lights
Starting with the easiest of the projects, creating DIY mason jar hanging lights and fixtures is a simple, easy task but one that will have some great payoff.
Chandeliers and Pendant Lights
Pendant lights are lone lights that hang down, typically from the ceiling. Whether suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod, they are popular options to use over kitchen counter tops, islands, and as features over dining room tables.
Outdoor Lighting
There is perhaps no better place for mason jar lighting than outdoors on a patio. Summer nights outside, lit by the warm glow of a fire pit, or coming from hanging or freestanding mason jars – it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic scene.
Step 2
Using your light socket as a guide, trace a circle on the top of the lid.
Step 3
Grab your nail and hammer, start punching holes along the inside edge of the circle. These holes will make it easier to cut the centre of the lid out, so don’t be shy!
Step 4
Without any air flow, the jar will start to get super hot when you turn on your light. To solve this problem, simply add holes to allow for ventilation. Do this by barely tapping your nail into the top of the jar. We liked how a bunch of small holes looked compared to a couple large ones. (How big you make your holes is up to you.)
Step 5
Now it’s time to remove the centre of the lid. To do this, grab your tin snips (scissors may work too) and start cutting along the holes.
Step 6
Push the light socket through the hole you made in the lid. (make sure to include the rim as well). Then screw on the ring that comes with your pendant light.
Step 7
Now you are ready to screw in your light bulb and secure it to the jar.

Step 1: Prep your mason jars
You want to make sure your jars are clean so the paint adheres nicely. Give them a nice wash and dry before starting.
Step 2: Mask the mason jars

Step 3: Paint the jars
Now we are into the fun part. I love spray paint and I love using it on mason jars. A good tip is to add thin layers of paint instead of 2 heavy coats. This keeps the drips at bay.
Step 4: Add the mason jar fairy lights
I love these lights. I was going to try to make something that would fit the mason jar but then I thought…why? They already make these solar fairy lights for that and the price was very reasonable. I got these four from Amazon and I think they were around $15. The jars were free to me and I already had the paint so this was really the only expense.
