Overview
Sixteen-year-old Erik Brandt barely knows what Germany is fighting for when he is drafted into Hitler's army in 1944. Sent to the killing fields of the Eastern Front, he is surrounded by unimaginable sights, more horrific than he ever thought possible. It's kill or be killed, and it seems clear that Erik's days are numbered.

A Young Soldier
Erik Brandt, the main character of Don Wulffson's Soldier X, is drafted into Hitler's army at 16 years old. He is a blond hair, blue-eyed poster-boy for Nazi youth.
Imposter
During an attack, Erik is badly wounded and he realizes that the rest of the German soldiers with him are dead. In fear that he will be taken prisoner by Russian troops, Erik takes the uniform of a dead Russian soldier and puts it on. When discovered by Russians, they believe Erik is one of their wounded soldiers.
The Secret Discovered
Like most secrets, Tamara finally learns that Erik is not a Russian soldier, but a German soldier. She hears Erik cursing in German and quickly figures out that he is a German. Despite her contempt for Germans, Tamara keeps his secret from the staff and the other patients. Unfortunately for Erik, her affection and interaction with him dwindle.
An Epiphany of War
Erik and Tamara are hungry and desperate, sleeping where they can, obtaining food when and where they can, and at one point even inspecting a dead soldier and relieving him of items they might be able to use to survive.
Characters
Erik struggles throughout the novel with notions of loyalty. His interactions with other people throughout the narrative exemplify the importance of personal honesty. Later, ss an elderly professor in the United States, his students assume he was an American GI when they learn of his participation in WWII.
