The findings showed that the learners’ FD/FI cognitive styles modulate their attentional behavior in the task of learning collocations through the input-flood technique. The FI students’ analytical tendencies and their reliance on self-defined goals helped them perceive and process the flooded passages independently and actively. It was found that flooding the passages had a significant role in directing the FI’s attention to the target collocations. In contrast, the FDs’ holistic orientation towards information processing and their reliance on externally defined rules and goals negatively affected their selective attention. Hence, increasing the exposure frequency was ineffective in drawing their attention to the target items. In addition, the FIs encoded and stored the target collocations in their working memory more efficiently. They actively analyzed the new lexical items and made a connection between the new information and their relevant prior knowledge. The result was a well-organized working memory structure which contributed to more successful recall and retrieval of the target collocations in the immediate and delayed post-tests.

The impact of these individual differences is believed to be more marked in the case of implicit learning tasks.
